Senators Sign Anton Forsberg to 3-Year Contract Extension

The Ottawa Senators have elected not to trade goaltender Anton Forsberg and have signed him to a three-year contract extension.

One of the goaltenders that would have attracted some interest before Monday’s trade deadline expired was Anton Forsberg out of Ottawa. You can remove his name from the board. The Ottawa Senators have signed Forsberg to a three-year $8.25 million contract extension.

Forsberg is an interesting player because he traveled around the NHL last season as teams tried to shore up their backup goaltending but Forsberg found the taxi squad system and the pandemic a tough challenge to navigate. Eventually, he signed with the Senators and has, in many respects, won the starting job from Matt Murray.

What the Senators do with Murray now will be an interesting storyline to watch. Murray has been hit and miss and inconsistent. The Senators are also a rebuilding team that might be better served to try and move his overpriced contract. And by move, we’re talking a buyout because few teams will want to take that contract on. A buyout would save the Senators $10 million over the next two seasons, but be a $2.5 million cap hit burden during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 season.

This season, Forsberg has played in 31 games (29 starts), posting a 2.77 GAA along with a .918 SV%. He was attracting a ton of interest heading into Monday’s deadline and with a low cap hit, he became one of the names to watch. It makes sense that the Senators ultimately elected not to make a move. The question now will be if Forsberg can repeat the success he’s having this season over the next few seasons.

As for what this means for goaltender Filip Gustavsson, the Sens might need to make a decision on the 23-year-old.
