The Senators add a near ready NHL left winger with the 2nd overall selection – German star, Tim Stützle.

Tim Stutzle NHL Draft 2020 2

In five years from now we can look back and see if the Senators were lucky to get Tim Stützle in third spot behind Quinton Byfield. Hopefully, both players will go on to great NHL careers, but only time will tell which player was the better choice.

Originally from Viersen, Germany – Stützle played last season with the Mannheim Eagles in Germany’s highest league (DEL). As an 18-year-old playing in a highly competitive league against grown men, Stützle still managed to score 7 goals and add 27 assists (34) in 41 games. As a member of the German world junior team in 2020, Stützle collected 5 helpers in five games.

German Player Development

Germany is slowly becoming a fixture in the first round. The country has reached an exciting new phase of hockey development. Last year in Vancouver, the Red Wings selected German defender Moritz Seider with the sixth overall selection. In 2018, the St Louis Blues selected German winger Dominik Bokk with the 25th overall pick.

Until today, the highest a German hockey player had ever been taken in the NHL draft was 3rd overall. Of course, that was in 2014 when the Edmonton Oilers selected current Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay award winner, Leon Draisaitl. And to think, at only 24 in his 5th full NHL season, Draisaitl is one of the best players in the game.

Certainly, a proud day for German hockey and a very exciting one for Senators fans – if Stützle can match or get close to Draisaitl’s accomplishments then the Sens will be laughing with this pick!

Before they do that, stay tuned for one more Senator pick in a matter of minutes as Ottawa also holds the 5th overall pick!  Big mystery at #5, but we will have full details when the pick is made!
