Senators Lock Up Jordan Spence on Four-Year, $5M AAV Extension
Ottawa Senators re-sign Jordan Spence to a four-year contract worth five million annually. Discover the details now.
The Ottawa Senators have re-signed defenseman Jordan Spence to a four-year contract worth $5 million annually, likely keeping one of their quietly impressive blueliners off the trade market.
The deal, which was reported to be closing Friday morning, is now done. At $5 million a year over four years, Ottawa gets solid value for a player who quietly elevated his game as the season progressed.
Spence is a two-way defenseman whose game is built on intelligence and positioning rather than physical dominance. He plays a smart, responsible game that tilts the ice in his team’s favor while avoiding situations where his lack of size could be exploited. After being sheltered in the first half of the season, Spence stepped into elevated minutes following the Olympics — averaging over 21 minutes per game down the stretch — and thrived in them. His underlying numbers were among the best on the blue line all season.

The extension doesn’t completely eliminate the possibility of a trade, but at $5 million it represents genuine value for a player trending upward. Ottawa had every reason to keep him in the fold as they push toward contention.
For a Senators team building its defensive core around the long term, getting Spence locked up at this price looks like a win.
