Ottawa Senators Buying Out Forward Bobby Ryan

As per reports Friday morning, the Ottawa Senators are executing a buyout on forward Bobby Ryan’s contract.

According to reports by both Darren Dreger of TSN and Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, the Ottawa Senators are executing a buyout on Bobby Ryan’s contract. Reports on Friday are that the Sens will place Ryan on waivers for the purposes of a buyout.

Ryan had two more years on his deal paying him $7.5 million per season in real cash at a $7.25-million cap hit. As per Capfriendly, a Ryan buyout would have the following cap hit implications for the Senators:

  • 2020-21: $3,583,333 (-3.7M)
  • 2021-22: $3,583,333(-3.7M)
  • 2022-23: $1,833,333 (+1.8M)
  • 2023-24: $1,833,333 (+1.8M)

This is an unfortunate exit for Ryan from the Senators organization after wining the Masterton Trophy earlier this month. The Masterton is awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Ryan, 33, joined the Senators during the 2013-14 season and has scored 107 goals and 266 points over 455 games with the club. Unfortunately, he’s recently had to deal with addiction issues and played just 24 games during the 2019-20 season. There was some doubt whether or not his playing career would continue.

When he did return, his journey was inspiration and he had one of the most memorable moments of the year when he scored a hat trick in his first game back in Ottawa.

Where Will Ryan Wind Up Next?

Ryan will now become an unrestricted free agent and while he’s going to have to take a much lower cap hit to land a job in the NHL, he could find work with a team looking for a risk/reward type contract. Ryan scored four goals in eight games after returning from the Player Assistance Program and if he can stay healthy, the former second overall pick could surprise people.

There’s a very good chance some teams is going to get a good season out of a motivated Bobby Ryan next season and for pretty cheap.
