Sean Monahan Deal to Montreal Offers Insight Into Price’s Status

The fact that the Montreal Canadiens are acquiring Sean Monahan and his contract likely says a lot about where Carey Price is at.

As the news was surfacing that Nazem Kadri had signed with the Calgary Flames on a seven-year contract at $7 million per season, the news was also spreading that Sean Monahan was being traded by the Calgary Flames to make room for Kadri’s contract. It was quickly learned that the Montreal Canadiens were picking up Monahan’s contract, but there was some uncertainty as to what was going back in the deal and where the Canadiens would make up the money to find room for Monahan’s salary.

A couple behind the scenes details started to surface regarding the move. Pat Steinberg wrote that Monahan had one year left at $6.375 million and the Canadiens couldn’t fit that in unless another move was made. Speculation was that another trade was coming. Many started to wonder what this all meant for Kirby Dach, who has yet to sign an extension with the team as an RFA and the team had little space with which to secure a deal for the newly-acquired center.

Then it was thought that this deal says a lot about the status of Carey Price.

Carey Price Sean Monahan Canadiens

Eric Engels reports, “Details on Monahan to Habs deal still being sorted, hence delay on news of return. Some sources indicate this deal could be linked to another one happening. No guarantee of that, but that’s what I’m hearing. Also believe a first-rd pick might be coming to MTL from CGY.” If the Canadiens aren’t moving money elsewhere, that has to mean that Price is about to hit LTIR. Jared Book of Habs Eyes on the Prize adds, “Unless there’s a significant contract going to Calgary or Monahan isn’t being bought out, I think this serves as an update on Carey Price’s health and… it’s not good.”

As it stands right now, it is believed Monahan is joining the Canadiens, along with a first-round pick to convince the Habs to take on his contract. Some are suggesting the Canadiens will make a corresponding move to clear out some salary cap space, but also are preparing to place Carey Price on LTIR.
