Scribe Pegs “Perfect”, But Likely Not Available Fit for Winnipeg Jets

One scribe identified a “perfect” fit for the Winnipeg Jets in a trade deadline deal, but he’s a player who likely isn’t available.

As the NHL trade deadline approaches, the Winnipeg Jets will have to make a decision. Having gone for it before, but with little to show for their efforts, GM Kevin Chevldayoff must determine how many chips, if any, to push in. The Jets are eyeing potential additions to strengthen an already deep and competitive roster. One name that has emerged as a “perfect” fit for the Jets is Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar.

According to Murat Ates of The Athletic, while Weegar would be an ideal addition to Winnipeg’s blue line, it is highly unlikely that Calgary will part ways with the 31-year-old.

Should the Jets Target Weegar Despite Flames Playoff Push?

Weegar, in his second season of an eight-year, $6.25 million contract, is a key piece of the Flames’ defense and their retooling. He is one of the league’s more underrated defensemen as he can produce on offense, but is also solid five-on-five and on the penalty kill. He’s been particularly effective when playing on the right side, which might make him an ideal fit alongside Jets star Josh Morrissey.

Weegar and Morrissey could be the Jets’ new top defensive pair and with solid defensive options like Dylan Samberg, Neal Pionk, and Brenden Dillon in depth roles, adding Weegar would give the Jets one of the league’s best defense corps. “He’s deep playoff run.”…Weegar can do all of the things Winnipeg might need,” argues Ates.

Ates acknowledged making the trade isn’t likely considering the Flames’ situation. They are currently fighting for a wild-card spot and are unlikely to trade away one of their most important defensive pieces. Even if they weren’t a playoff team, GM Craig Conroy isn’t about to move Weegar without a serious return.

Weegar’s affordable contract and strong impact on the ice make him someone the Flames shouldn’t trade, even if they wind up missing the postseason. It’s rare to get a player of his caliber to lock in for his pricetag.
