Game 1 Qualifier: Montreal Canadiens Take Pittsburgh Penguins in Overtime
Games Notes:
Jeff Petry is the hero as the Montreal Canadiens jump to an early 1-0 series lead in their best-of-five with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Petry scored in the overtime period to give the Canadiens a 3-2 victory. Petry picked up a loose puck in the right faceoff circle and sent a shot past goalie Matt Murray, who got the start over Tristan Jarry for the Pens. The Canadiens will go with Carey Price.
Pittsburgh and Montreal was one of the highly-anticipated series in the Eastern Conference with some star players, questions in goal, and potential changes coming to one or both teams depending on how they fare. Game 1 didn’t disappoint.
There were questions around Sidney Crosby but he looked good and Evgeni Malkin played well for the Penguins, bringing the club back after Montreal came out to an early lead. However, a few misses by Conor Sheary and some battling by Montreal was the difference-maker. Montreal killed off a 5-on-3 power play for 1:32 early in the third period and both teams then failed to connect on 5-on-4 advantages.
