Sam Bennett Suspended for Boarding Tampa Bay’s Blake Coleman

Sam Bennett will have a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety for his hit on Blake Coleman. He’s likely to be suspended.

One game into the 2020-21 NHL playoffs for the Florida Panthers and Sam Bennett may have earned the NHL’s first fine/suspension. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has announced that Bennett will have a hearing for his boarding hit against Tampa Bay’s Blake Coleman.

The incident occurred at 11:46 of the third period in Tampa Bay’s 5-4 win in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup First Round at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, on Sunday. Bennett received a minor penalty for charging at 12:19. Coleman remained in the game.

You can see the hit below. It was a play where Bennett skated in from a great distance and took a run at Coleman who has his back turned on the play and was in an awkward position. The fact that Bennett is having a hearing all but guarantees he will be suspended for at least one game.

Update: Bennett has been suspended for one game for Boarding Tampa Bay’s Blake Coleman. The official announcement came down on Tuesday afternoon. With Bennett suspended, Alexander Wennberg is likely to slot into the second-line center role.

Bennett joined the Panthers at this year’s NHL trade deadline and has seen a career resurgence with the Florida Panthers. A player who was on the outs in Calgary, he scored 15 points in 10 games, along with six goals. He elevated himself up their lineup quickly and immediately meshed with the team.

At the same time, while he’s a player known for stepping up in the playoffs, a couple of bad penalties resulting in goals against for the Panthers is not exactly how Bennett wanted to kick things off. He did have two assists in Game 1, so sometimes you take the good with the bad.

The Panthers are hoping he’s not out of the lineup for long, especially considering they are now down by a game in this best-of-seven series with the Lightning.
