Sabres Trading for Ben Bishop’s Contract From Dallas Stars

The Buffalo Sabres are working on acquiring the contract of goaltender Ben Bishop from the Dallas Stars.

According to a new report by NHL insider Kevin Weekes, the Buffalo Sabres are working on acquiring the contract of goaltender Ben Bishop from the Dallas Stars. This would be a salary cap move for the Sabres who would likely get a bit of a sweetener to take on Bishop’s remaining year at a $4.9 million cap hit.

Bishop is out on LTIR and hasn’t played in the NHL since 2019/20. He essentially retired with a “degenerative knee injury” in December 2021. This is not a move to acquire a player who is likely to play for the Sabres. This is simply a cap strategy move that teams will take to acquire other assets to get to the cap floor. This is essentially GM Kevyn Adams weaponizing the Sabres’ cap space.

As per Cap Friendly, “Bishop is 35 years old. This means that if his contract is still insured his $3.5M in actual salary still owed would only be covered up to 60%.”
