Robert Thomas Clears Up Trade Rumors Out of St. Louis
Robert Thomas spoke about the process and trade rumors regarding his situation. Did things get close? Was he asked about a trade?
Robert Thomas, the star center for the St. Louis Blues, was one of the most talked-about potential trade pieces leading up to the 2026 NHL trade deadline.
Despite heavy speculation and reports of serious discussions, no trade materialized, and Thomas remained with the Blues. He recently spoke about the process and trade rumors regarding his situation. Did things get close? Was he asked about a trade to go to Buffalo?
St. Louis GM Doug Armstrong was reportedly demanding a massive return for Thomas — a package equivalent to multiple first-round picks, top prospects, and possibly NHL-ready players. Thomas has a long-term contract through 2033, with an $8.125 million cap hit and a full no-trade clause, giving him significant control and complicating any deal. Still, just days ahead of the deadline, there was speculation the Blues were working on a deal to send him to the Sabres and it was quite close.
The Sabres Pushed Hard, But the Blues Never Asked
The Buffalo Sabres were the most aggressive suitor, and talks “heated up”, as per TSN’s Darren Dreger, with Buffalo pushing hard but ultimately unwilling to meet St. Louis’ demands. The rumored package involved prospects like Konsta Helenius, Owen Power, Jack Quinn, and a first-round pick. The deal fell apart. But how far along did it get?
Greg Wyshynski of The Sheet asked Thomas directly. “I know Colton Parayko got so far down the line that he talked to Jarmo. Did your situation get that far where you were talking?” Thomas was asked. “No, no. I was never asked, you know, anything from the Blues. It was, you know, everything that I heard was coming from the “insiders” and different things online, and yeah, no, I just want to be clear, I was never asked, nor did I ever ask for a trade.”

Despite interest from the Sabres, the Utah Mammoth, and, to a lesser degree, the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, and even mentions of the Pittsburgh Penguins, nothing was so close that Thomas was approached about it.
Thomas hadn’t requested a trade, and much of the buzz came from media/insiders rather than direct team discussions. The Blues did trade Brayden Schenn and they did ask Colton Parayko about a deal to the Sabres, which the defenseman ultimately declined.
