Confusion Over Hurricanes Tweet Announcing Rod Brind’Amour Deal

It seems like the Hurricanes have announced a contract extension for Rob Brind’Amour, but there might be some confusion.

The Carolina Hurricanes have seemingly announced that an extension with head coach Rob Brind’Amour is pretty much a done deal. They’ve noted that the coach will be sticking around on a three-year extension. Elliotte Friedman is reporting that officially the deal is not finalized, but added, “there is a three-year extension in the works at approximately $1.8M/season.”

The fact that the Hurricanes announced it on their Twitter page suggests the deal is done, if not pretty much done. But, there’s also speculation this was not a tweet about a future extension. Instead, that this was a tweet celebrating his third anniversary since his hiring.

It would not be a good look if the team announced the extension and it wasn’t actually finalized. This is especially true since it was believed there were a few small hurdles the team and Brind’Amour needed to work through when it came to getting deals in place for his coaching, equipment and training staff.

Some are saying this is a lot of money, while others are thinking he should have gotten more. Considering some coaches salaries have gone through the roof in recent years, this is pretty good deal for a coach who has led his team to the kind of success the Hurricanes are having this year.

This could be a situation where he took less to ensure his staff got paid — Brind’Amour made over 50 million while playing — but this could also be the start of a trend back down to coaching salaries evening out in a financially troubling time for owners and hockey clubs. It will be interesting to see how this affects someone like Travis Green in Vancouver.
