The Detroit Red Wings remain firmly in the mix as well, armed with the high-end prospects New York covets and a clear need down the middle. It was said that the Red Wings “make a ton of sense.”

“If he’s willing to waive to one of the group of teams that’s been calling [Chris] Drury on him, I’d say he’s dealt next weekend,” an NHL executive source said. “From what I was told, I think both sides (player and team) know this is real and are willing to work with each other if it makes sense,” said another.

Trocheck Is Likely to Be Moved Ahead of the Trade Deadline

Trocheck, 32, has a 12-team no-trade clause and is in the fourth year of a seven-year, $39.3 million contract. Following the Artemi Panarin trade to the Los Angeles Kings, Trocheck is the next big name to possibly leave the Rangers.

He offers a ton of attributes a contending team might like, including a strong presence on a penalty kill. When asked about how well Team USA’s PK fared, he responded, “I’m pretty f—— proud, I’ll be honest. Yeah, we heard all the talk, that we shouldn’t be here…We were able to come here and we had a job to do, and it was to be good penalty kill guys, faceoff guys, character guys. We took that role and we ran with it.”’
