Rangers to Buy Out Henrik Lundqvist’s Contract This Week

After 15 seasons, Henrik Lundqvist will be bought out by the New York Rangers this week.

According to a number of sources, the New York Rangers have made an official decision on goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and decided to buy out the remaining term on his contract with the team. That buyout could come as early as this Wednesday.

Quite possibly, the greatest New York Ranger player of all-time and clearly one of the best goalies in NHL history, Lundqvist had an exemplary run with the team and one no netminder is likely to repeat. He will leave the Rangers after 15 seasons with the team, the only organization he’s ever played for in the NHL.

As per the specifics of the buyout on CapFriendly: 2020-21: $5,500,000 (-3.0M) 2021-22: $1,500,000 (+1.5M).

With the buyout, the Rangers will now have nearly $13 million in dead cap space next season. Kevin Shattenkirk buyout $6.08 million, Lundqvist buyout $5.5 million Dan Girardi buyout $1.11 million Ryan Spooner buyout $300k. They’ll also have more than $23 million in cap space to sign players and dip into the free agent market.

Not a Shock, But Still a Shock

This isn’t coming as a surprise to Lundqvist. Reports were that he and the Rangers discussed this route at some point after their season ended. Unfortunately, that probably doesn’t change the reality of the situation and how much it stings that this is happening.

What’s next for the Hall of Famer? Would he take a 1-2yr deal to chase a Stanley Cup in 2021 or 2022?
