Rangers’ Matt Rempe Faces Hefty Suspension After Heiskanen Hit
Rangers’ Matt Rempe faces a hefty suspension after delivering a dangerous elbow to Miro Heiskanen, earning a game misconduct.
New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe is facing potentially hefty disciplinary action from the NHL Department of Player Safety following a controversial incident involving Miro Heiskanen of the Dallas Stars. The hit, which occurred during a game on December 20, 2024, resulted in a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for elbowing.
The NHL DoPS wrote in a statement on social media: “NY Rangers’ Matt Rempe has been offered an in-person hearing for boarding/elbowing Dallas’ Miro Heiskanen. Date and time TBD.”

This marks the fourth time in just 22 NHL appearances that Rempe has been ejected from a game, raising concerns about his aggressive style of play and discipline. The latest incident has prompted the league to schedule an in-person hearing, a process typically reserved for violations that could result in suspensions longer than five games.
Rempe’s history of disciplinary issues is starting to draw attention around the league. While he avoided suspension earlier this season after a separate incident involving Jake Neighbours, this latest hit on Heiskanen will lead to a harsher penalty given the severity of the play and his growing track record.

As Rempe faces possible suspension, questions are being raised about whether the young forward has much of am NHL future. He was just called up to the NHL and, in his first game back, is going to be suspended. He can’t seem to find the line between playing hard and playing illegal hockey that ultimately injures people.
He needs to adjust his playing style, and if the NHL DoPS throws the book at him, it won’t be surprising. He has more ejections than he has points in his NHL career. And, this is not just because of his size, as some fans for the Rangers are trying to argue in his defense.
