Quinn Hughes Banged Up, Game-Time Decision for Canucks

Canucks’ captain Quinn Hughes is reportedly dealing with a minor injury that could keep him out of the lineup versus the San Jose Sharks.

Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet told the media on Monday he was going to be making a game-time decision on the status of Quinn Hughes. The star defenseman is banged up from an incident in the previous game, and his availability for the team’s upcoming game against the San Jose Sharks is uncertain. Hughes, who has been a critical piece of the Canucks’ success this season, is said to be dealing with a minor issue.

“He’s dealing with a couple of things that we’ll figure out at game time,” Tocchet told reporters. He added, “He’ll probably want to play, but I’ll make that decision.” Tocchet didn’t seem to think it was anything serious, and it’s not something that has been lingering. “It just happened last game.”

Hughes has been instrumental for Vancouver, contributing points and assists while anchoring the blue line. He’s also being praised for his role as the captain, trying to help his team work through a ton of chatter regarding off-ice issues between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. His absence could significantly impact the Canucks odds of winning. Hughes is, without question, the Canucks best player.

As game time approaches, all eyes will be on Hughes’ status and whether the Canucks star defenseman is unable to suit up. With the holiday break around the corner, Tocchet may elect to shut his captain down. From the sounds of it, should that happen, Hughes won’t be thrilled with the decision.

Even if Hughes does play, his minutes will likely be watched closely. Even though Hughes plays more than 25 minutes a night, the idea of aggravating something doesn’t seem wise.
