Predicting Landing Spots For NHL’s Top Stars at the 2026 Trade Deadline Pt. 1
Explore the 2026 trade deadline and its potential to reshape the league with key player movements and rumored trades.
The 2026 trade deadline has the potential to reshape the league. Over the last few weeks, several big-name players appear to have hit the open market, setting the stage for what could be a fascinating deadline day.
For contenders, these are the types of players who can help win a playoff series. So, using rumours and reports from around the NHL, here are the projected landing spots for four of the biggest names expected to be in play.
Artemi Panarin: Florida Panthers
The New York Rangers released a letter to the fan base outlining the team’s direction and its plans for a small retool. Shortly after, a follow-up report surfaced suggesting the Rangers are not planning to offer Panarin a new contract. Because of that, there is a strong chance he is moved at this year’s deadline, which makes the Florida Panthers a logical landing spot.

Panarin carries a full no-move clause, but Florida is one of the few destinations that could realistically convince him to waive it. The Panthers offer the appeal of a tax-free state and the opportunity to play alongside elite talent like Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, and Sam Bennett. There is also the chance to reunite with former teammate Sergei Bobrovsky. Florida has a history of making aggressive moves, and it helps that they are without Aleksander Barkov for the season due to injury, which creates room to accommodate Panarin’s $11.6 million cap hit.
Rasmus Andersson: Toronto Maple Leafs
As the Calgary Flames prepare to transition into a rebuild, Rasmus Andersson stands out as their most valuable trade chip. A right-shot defenceman capable of handling top-pair minutes on an affordable contract is a rare commodity, especially at the deadline.
The Toronto Maple Leafs make the most sense as a landing spot. They have been linked to Andersson for months, and the fit is obvious. General manager Brad Treliving knows him well from their time together in Calgary, and Toronto has been searching for a legitimate partner for Morgan Rielly for years. The biggest hurdle is the asking price, which is expected to be steep. A deal could involve multiple first-round picks or potentially one of Easton Cowan or Ben Danford.
Nazem Kadri: Colorado Avalanche
Flames’ forward Nazem Kadri is arguably the most impactful postseason addition available at this deadline. He brings edge, confidence, and championship experience that rarely becomes available mid-season. He also brings term. After signing a multi-year deal two seasons ago, he still has four years remaining on his contract at a $7 million cap hit.
While several teams have checked in, a reunion with the Colorado Avalanche makes the most sense. Colorado remains firmly in its competitive window but has lacked consistency in its middle six for some time. That has not stopped them from being one of the league’s top teams, but Kadri would immediately address that issue. A return to the organization where he won a Stanley Cup could be enough for him to waive any trade protection, and the Avalanche already know exactly how to deploy him.
