Pietrangelo Says He’ll Explore All Free Agency Options

Pierre LeBrun reports on The Athletic (subscription required) that St. Louis Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo intends to explore all his options in free agency this offseason, even if they do not include the Blues.

Understanding that free agency could drastically change for a number of players this summer, he knows that what he can get versus what he might be asking for means he might have to look in a variety of places.

When asked about a short-term or long-term play, he didn’t specify if he was leaning one way or another, only that he was going to look at every possible scenario.

Pietrangelo said:

“I’m going to explore all options, you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you’re not sitting back there with your agents and your family laying out everything on the table, thinking about every possibility, that’s really what you should be doing. When you have a growing family, it’s one of those things where if you can put yourself into a position where you’re somewhere long term, it’s a little bit easier than having to pick up and move potentially every couple of years.’’

There is news that St. Louis wants to hang onto him, but legitimate concern the team won’t be able to afford him. These comments probably don’t hel[p matters much. If Pietrangelo is willing to look at everything, including other teams, he’s either trying to leverage the Blues or he’s seriously thinking about a future that might not include the Blues organization.

The real question will be what options present themselves. There will certainly be teams that would love to have one of the top blueliners in the NHL but not a ton that can afford him.

Will he take less now for more later? Or, will he want the max today knowing nothing is guaranteed?
