Adding more intrigue to the NHL free agency situation surrounding Alex Pietrangelo, the defenseman just hopped on a plane headed to Las Vegas today. As Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports, these are “the kind of visit free agents used to be able to make during the interview window before the signing period opened.”
This comes after news early Saturday that he would not be making a decision on his NHL future today. According to a tweet from his good friend Carlo Colaiacovo: ”Alex Pietrangelo will spend the day evaluating his option and is not expected to make his decision today.”
Vegas is really the only team rumored to be left with a keen interest in the d-man and one that he has on his list of preferred destinations. It looks like he’s going to get check things out in person.
Andy Strickland writes that he believed Pietrangelo was set to make the trip to Vegas public knowledge and isn’t sure why he decided to not do so. It was the airport staff that actually tweeted out the photo. He also adds that Pietrangelo plans to stay for 24 hours.
If it wasn’t clear Vegas was the frontrunner before, they certainly are now.
