Pettersson, Miller Trade Update: Insider Says 3 Options on Table
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman provide a huge trade update on Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller confirming three options are on the table.
Elliotte Friedman offered a massive update on trade rumors surrounding the Vancouver Canucks, specifically Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. Noting during Saturday’s Headline report that there is absolutely something to the trade speculation and that the Canucks are taking offers on both players, Friedman says there are three realistic options on the table that the Canucks might be considering.

Vancouver Canucks: Navigating a Pivotal Decision
The Canucks are in a tough position considering reports that the beef between Miller and Pettersson is not something the two can squash. As such, significant trade discussions surround the two cornerstone players. Ian McIntyre’s interview with Canucks GM Patrick Allvin has sparked conversations about potential moves, and Elliotte Friedman has added context from his own calls around the league.
Friedman confirmed that the Canucks are actively assessing the trade market for both players and he’s heard that there are three legitimate options remain on the table:
- Neither player is traded.
- One of the players is moved.
- Both Pettersson and Miller are dealt.

While no specific predictions were made, the Canucks are reportedly prepared for any of these scenarios. The fact that trading both players is one of the realistic options seems to suggest the organization is tired of its soap opera and might be ready to start fresh. In other words, getting rid of both players and bring in valuable assets that don’t have baggage.
What the Canucks Need in Return for Pettersson and/or Miller
If either player is traded, Friedman noted that a center will be the primary target in return. The NHL insider explained that while Canucks fans might prioritize bolstering the defense—especially with injuries to key players like Quinn Hughes and Filip Hronek—the organization is focusing on addressing a potential gap at center. That’s because moving out Pettersson and/or Miller leaves a huge hole down the middle.
A trade package could include other assets, but securing a capable center is seen as the foundation of any potential deal. When asked about who might be in talks and if Mika Zibanejad or K’Andre Miller were part of a potential package, Friedman responded that a Miller trade probably would have been done already if on the table and that Zibanejad has a no-move clause.

Pettersson’s Situation
Pettersson has become one of the NHL’s most dynamic players, making him a highly attractive target for other teams. Despite the rumors, there’s no indication that Pettersson has requested a trade. However, his contract situation looms large. If the Canucks feel uncertain about his long-term commitment, they may consider moving him while his value is at its peak.
Teams with cap flexibility and a surplus of centers could emerge as suitors, though prying Pettersson away from Vancouver would come at a steep price.
Friedman also dismissed the idea of Miller heading to Toronto, stating that if Miller were to waive his no-move clause, it would likely be for a team in the U.S., not Canada.
Did One Of Pettersson or Miller Ask for a Trade?
Friedman clarified that no credible evidence supports claims of a trade request from any player. Instead, it appears Vancouver is exploring options on its own. That doesn’t mean something is imminent, but it appears the Canucks are seeing what’s available.
This could be a play by the team to show each player they have limited patience with all this drama. Or, it could be serious trade discussions with the intent to move at least one of these forwards if the right return is out there.
