NHL Trades and Rumors

Penguins Almost Landed Dunn in Trade, Other Teams in the Mix

According to reports, the Pittsburgh Penguins were close to make a trade for defenseman Vince Dunn. Other teams now in the mix.

In the wake of news that both Sam Bennett and Victor Mete have reportedly asked for trades from their respective hockey clubs, NHL insiders continue to keep an eye on the Vince Dunn situation out of St. Louis. Speculation is the Blues defenseman is on the trade block as the team looks to clear cap space.

The Score’s Josh Wegman looked at possible trade destinations for the 24-year-old and notes the Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and New York Rangers could all be in the mix when it comes to trade talks. Interestingly, one team was rumored to be in the running but was not among Wegman’s list was the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now says his sources note the Penguins and Blues “were close on Dunn”, meaning a trade was in the works. The site does assert that no sources mentioned any of the Pens star players coming back the other way, “and such a trade would both break St. Louis’ salary cap and be well more than the reported ask for Dunn, which was a high pick.”

This, of course, would have been one of the final moves from former GM Jim Rutherford before stepping down this week. Also intriguing, the Penguins no longer seem to be among the favorites to land Dunn, despite a serious need for help on the blue line.

Are the Penguins Still in the Mix?

The Penguins could use a left-handed defenseman as the top four d-men on the depth chart are out with serious injury. Soo too, there are questions about how active interim GM Patrik Allvin will be considering the Penguins are actively looking for a new GM. Dunn might not stay on the market all that long and the interim GM might want to make a mark on the team while under consideration for the full-time job.

Kingerski did not know what Rutherford might have been offering in return for Dunn but considering the player is an RFA after the season and currently makes only $1.8 million, that at least five other teams are rumored to be interested isn’t a shock.
