Panthers Actively Trying to Trade Sergei Bobrovsky

The Florida Panthers are reportedly pushing hard to trade veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. As per a report by Nick Kypreos said on the “Real Kyper & Bourne” show, the Panthers believe it’s time to move on and give Spencer Knight the best odds at becoming the team’s starter. Kypreos says the Panthers’ mentality on the trade is: “In terms of takers, who needs a goalie, and we are willing to hold cash back. And I’m told as much as 50 percent.”

If the Panthers are willing to retain 50% of his contract, it’s likely they’ll be able to find a taker for his contract. Four years at $5 million per season for Bobrovsky is a good deal and despite blips on his radar in recent seasons, the 2021-22 campaign was a strong one for the former two-time Vezina Trophy Winner. Through 54 games in 2021-22, he went 39-7-3 with a .913 save percentage and 2.67 GAA. The Panthers were disappointed in the playoffs, but he helped lead the team to the President’s Trophy. The elimination was certainly not his fault as he posted a .911 SV% and 2.70 GAA through 10 games.

Still only 33 years old, he has a no-move clause that kicks in July of 2024 so a trade would simply be about finding the right fit, clearing some cap space for the Panthers and trying to anything back in return they possibly can.

As for teams that will be in the market for goaltenders, the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils top the list.
