Ovechkin Scores: NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup Dec. 29

In our NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Dec 29), Ovechkin one closer to Gretzky, Jets roar back for win, Team USA beats Team Latvia.

Welcome back to the NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (December 29). We will bring you three key NHL stories in brief each morning. Stay updated on the latest team performances, trade buzz, and standout player news from around the league. Here are today’s three key roundup topics.

Ovechkin Nets Record 60th Empty-Net Goal in Return

Alex Ovechkin scored his 60th career empty-net goal in his return to the Washington Capitals lineup. He’s one closer in his chase of the NHL’s all-time goals record. With 16 goals in 19 games this season, Ovechkin is now just 26 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894. Despite missing 16 games, he has tied Connor McMichael for the team lead in goals, helping the Capitals (24-9-2) stay close to the Metropolitan Division-leading New Jersey Devils.

Washington’s 50 points put them just one behind New Jersey (51 points) in the tight Metro race after the Devils’ loss to Carolina. The Capitals’ playoff push was boosted by key games from their roster, including contributions from players like McMichael. Meanwhile, New Jersey’s loss was partly attributed to standout games from Carolina’s Jack Roslovic and Seth Jarvis, who totaled six points in the win.

Jets Rally to Win with Contributions from Connor and Scheifele

Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele each scored and added an assist to help the Winnipeg Jets (26-10-1) extend their win streak to three games with a 4-2 comeback victory over the Ottawa Senators. Trailing 2-0 early, the Jets capitalized on mistakes to tie the game. Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves, keeping Winnipeg in the game as they took control.

The Senators (18-15-2) lost their second straight after a six-game winning streak. Tim Stutzle and Ridly Greig had put Ottawa ahead with power-play goals. Ottawa’s key mistakes allowed Winnipeg’s top players to find their rhythm. The Senators look to bounce back in their next game against Minnesota.

Team U.S. Skates to 5-1 Win Over Latvia

Danny Nelson scored twice to lead the United States (2-0-0-0) to a 5-1 win over giant-killer Latvia in preliminary-round action at the World Juniors. James Hagens contributed two assists, and goalie Hampton Slukynsky made 25 saves in the win. Team USA improved to first place in Group A.

Team Latvia (0-1-0-1) came into the game after a stunning win over Team Canada but was unable to build on that. Latvia generated chances, including two breakaways in the second period, but could not capitalize. After a strong start, Latvia allowed two power-play goals by the U.S. and ultimately fell. Despite the loss, Latvia’s defence remained strong against the U.S. Mistakes proved costly.
