Overcrowded Ottawa Senators May Need to Make a Trade

Do the Ottawa Senators have so many centers and defenseman that they need to make a trade now? If so, who?

The Ottawa Senators have done some really good things this offseason. One of the few teams to have an excess of salary cap space, they used time to try and spend some of the money they had and weaponized their cap space making astute trades. They added players like Derek Stepan, Cedric Paquette, Alex Galchenyuk, Chris Tierney, Evgenii Dadonov, Matt Murray and others. In fact, they may have done such a proficient job adding pieces that they have too many players.

Ken Warren of the Ottawa Sun recently took a look at how quickly the Senators filled spots at the center and defense positions. At center, he believes after making signings and then trading for Derek Stepan and Cedric Paquette, the team now has too many pivots.

The roster has five legitimate NHL centers now and that could mean the exit of players who don’t fit as well or take up additional salary. Specifically, he mentions that the team might try to move either Artem Anisimov or Logan Brown.

Warren writes:

“The simplest solution here would be to move on from Anisimov, whose game is too slow for the modern NHL, but it will be tough to find a taker for the $1.5 million left on his deal. At some point here, the Senators also have a major decision to make on what to do with Logan Brown, who is headed into his third professional season while trying to win a permanent spot in the NHL.

Senators Have Too Many Defensemen Too

The Sens have a similar issue on their blue line where it’s also packed with real options and not enough space. Warren writes that with Thomas Chabot, Nikita Zaitsev, Erik Gudbranson, Braydon Coburn, Mike Reilly, Josh Brown, Christian Wolanin, Erik Brannstrom, Artem Zub, Lassi Thomson on all the roster, they’ll be a shortage of playing time available.

He adds that the Senators may need to trading away veterans before the trade deadline to solve the issue, but also asks what head coach D.J. Smith to play in the short term.
