McKenna and Bobrovsky Could Become Difference-Makers for the Maple Leafs

His first big point is Gavin McKenna. Biron thinks the rookie and Matthews are actually going to click as a duo, and he’s not just throwing that out there blindly. He’s pegging McKenna for something like 15 goals and 45 assists in his first year, which is a reasonable, not-too-far-out projection for a teenager stepping into the league. The real payoff, though, is what that means for Matthews. If even 30 of those assists end up going to Matthews, that’s a real path back to 50-plus goals for him.

Then there’s Bobrovsky. Biron’s take here is pretty simple: Toronto’s biggest issue in net wasn’t talent; it was availability. Stolarz and Woll played well when healthy. But “when healthy” was the problem. He doesn’t think Bobrovsky’s peak Vezina-level days are still ahead of him, even if he’ll still deliver big saves when it counts. But a healthy, elite Matthews playing at his Rocket Richard, Hart-calibre best is what Biron thinks actually wins Toronto games.

The last piece is the blue line, where Biron gets a little more conditional. He likes the group, but says it all comes down to Chris Tanev staying healthy. He’s a fan of Emil Andrae as a young defenseman with real upside. He also likes how Raddysh, McCabe, and Tanev being in the mix takes pressure off Morgan Rielly to be the guy carrying the group.

Put it all together, and Biron’s optimism really comes down to a few dominoes falling the right way: McKenna clicking with Matthews, Bobrovsky actually staying on the ice, and Tanev’s body cooperating for a full season. None of that’s guaranteed. But if it all lines up, Biron thinks Toronto’s got a real bounce-back season in front of them.
