Oilers Will “Have the Discussion, There’s No Doubt About It”

Will the Edmonton Oiles go to goaltender Tristan Jarry in Game 4 versus the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday? Is it too big a risk?

Expect the Edmonton Oilers to make a tough call as Game 4 against the Anaheim Ducks approaches and the Oilers are in a near must-win situation. Edmonton can’t afford to go down 3-1 in the series, but they may have to call upon goaltender Tristan Jarry, who brings with him trust issues.

Jarry hasn’t been good since he returned from injury. He’s delivered in one-off appearances, but overall, he’s struggled. At the same time, Edmonton has allowed 13 goals in the last two games with Connor Ingram as their starter. Most of the goals aren’t on him, but there have been times when a key save might have made a difference.

Do the Oilers go with Jarry in a game that could mean the series? Or, do they give Ingram one more look and hope that the team in front of him plays a more well-rounded game?

Kelly Hrudey believes the Oilers will have the discussion.

He explained, “Oh, they’ll have the discussion—there’s no doubt about it. It’s just minutes after the loss, but I think I’d be leaning toward Jarry.”

“The thing for me was after the Sennecke goal—or yeah—and then they scored 43 seconds later. That was the one where I think they just needed a save. It was a beautiful goal by Carlsson, but I just think Ingram had to make a save there.”

Hrudey then suggested the 6–4 backhand goal by Viel was a bad one where Ingram got caught too deep in his crease. “I understand it. Sennecke does have a great release, but on this one, you just need a timely save.” He noted, “But when you look at this one, though, he’s caught deep, and Murphy doesn’t do him any favors. So there’s a lot of discussion there, for sure.”

Is Jarry Getting the Start In Game 4?

Would going to Jarry be a mistake? He’s been cold, not getting into any games as the regular season wound down. Throwing him in now could work, but it’s also a huge risk. Then again, this is the netminder the Oilers bet on. He’s the goalie they traded for and the one locked into a contract. They’ll need him to be good and the only way to find out if he can be is to play him.
