Oilers Sign Devin Shore to 1-Yr Contract

The Edmonton Oilers have inked Devin Shore to a one-year contract. The deal comes after a successful tryout.

The Edmonton Oilers have inked PTO tryout Devin Shore to a one-year contract. The deal is a two-way contract and the team has placed the centre on waivers, likely to place him on the taxi squad when he clears. Edmonton made the official announcement on Wednesday morning, just prior to their season opening game with the Vancouver Canucks.

There was speculation the Oilers had placed Jujhar Khaira on waivers in the the hopes someone would claim him and his more expensive salary. Khaira cleared and rejoined the team. He was not placed on the Oilers taxi squad and was taking fourth-line duty in training camp on Tuesday. That meant the future of Shore was unclear as he wasn’t cut or listed on the taxi squad, but the Oilers hadn’t publicly released their official roster.

The answer came the next day when the Oilers announced Shore had signed. As David Staples writes, “Shore has outscored Jujhar Khaira by significant amount at even strength over past two years.” He adds, “But the competition just got amped up one more notch on the Oilers, which is welcome. Deepest Oilers team since ’05.”

Shore’s contract is worth US$700,000 in the NHL. In the minors, the deal is for 150K ($200K Guaranteed). He will be RFA w/ arbitration rights on expiry, and the forward is one year from UFA status.

The 26-year-old centre has appeared in 288 career NHL games over five seasons with Dallas, Anaheim & Columbus, posting 39 goals & 67 assists.
