Rumors Swirl as Oilers Are Linked to Red Wings Goalie Sebastian Cossa

The NHL offseason rumor mill is already in full swing, and one of the latest names being connected to the Edmonton Oilers is Detroit Red Wings goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa. Multiple posts circulating on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday evening suggested that a trade involving Cossa could be nearing completion, though nothing has been confirmed by either organization.

Oilers Continue Search for Goaltending Answers

Goaltending has been one of Edmonton’s biggest question marks for several seasons, and it has become increasingly clear that the organization needs a long-term solution. Rumors surrounding Cossa have existed for weeks, with Edmonton previously mentioned as a possible landing spot for the former Edmonton Oil Kings netminder.

A return to Edmonton would certainly make for an interesting storyline. Cossa spent his junior career with the Oil Kings and helped lead the franchise to success in the Western Hockey League before being selected 15th overall by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft.

If Detroit is indeed willing to move the towering netminder, Edmonton would likely have strong interest.

Why Cossa Would Make Sense for Edmonton

The 6-foot-7 goaltender has steadily developed in the American Hockey League and appears ready to take the next step in his career. While he may not immediately arrive as a No. 1 goaltender, many believe he is prepared for an NHL backup role and could eventually grow into a starter.

That type of progression is exactly what the Oilers have been searching for. Edmonton’s current championship window with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl requires stability in goal, but it also requires thinking beyond the immediate future. Acquiring a young goaltender with upside could provide both.

Cossa’s blend of size, athleticism, and experience makes him one of the more intriguing young goaltenders in hockey. If he reaches his potential, he could become for the Oilers what Jesper Wallstedt has become for the Minnesota Wild — a highly regarded young netminder capable of eventually taking over the crease.

Plenty of Questions Remain

Of course, there are still several hurdles before any trade could become reality. First and foremost, there is no confirmation that a deal even exists. Secondly, Detroit would have to determine whether moving one of its top goaltending prospects makes sense for the organization’s long-term plans.

From Edmonton’s perspective, the cost would also be decent. Young, NHL-ready goaltenders are rarely available, and the Red Wings would undoubtedly ask for valuable assets in return. For now, Oilers fans should view the reports as exactly what they are — rumors.

Still, if the speculation eventually turns into reality, Sebastian Cossa could represent one of the most important additions Edmonton has made in years and potentially provide the franchise with a long-awaited answer between the pipes.
