The Edmonton Oilers are going the be shuffling things up a touch on Sunday as they try to win the first of a couple of matchups against the Winnipeg Jets. The big change will come on the top line as the Oilers will run with winger Jesse Puljujarvi alongside Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

While Puljujarvi hasn’t potted any goals on the scoresheet yet, he has been buzzing. He’s been tenacious on the puck, he’s been heavy on the forecheck and not afraid to lay in a hit or two, or get a little feisty when the situation calls for it. Frankly, he’s done a lot of good and it’s a pitty he’s not been rewarded for all that hard work.

Head coach Dave Tippett has decided to offer a bit of a reward in the form of better minutes and a bigger opportunity. “He’s been around a lot of chances but hasn’t capitalized,” Tippett said. “We don’t need Jesse to change his game. We need him to keep doing what he’s doing.”

The hope here is that he gets more than a handful of shifts alongside McDavid to see how it works. In the past, coaches have been quick to move him off of lines and take away his opportunities and it was kind of action that led to Puljujarvi’s discomfort with the organization. It doesn’t seem like Tippett will take a similar approach, which is good because Puljujarvi seems energetic and excited to be back.

Outside of Puljujarvi switching spots with Zack Kassian, the Oilers are going to run with the same roster as they did in Friday’s loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Edmonton didn’t play that badly, they just couldn’t capitalize on their chances and the Maple Leafs potted one late.

The Oilers Roster Tonight

The lines will be as follows:

  • RNH-McDavid-Puljujarvi
  • Kahun-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
  • Ennis-Turris-Kassian
  • Neal-Shore-Archibald

On defense, the pairings will be Darnell Nurse with Ethan Bear, Kris Russell with Tyson Barrie and Slater Koekkoek with Adam Larsson. It’s interesting that there was a lot of buzz surrounding Evan Bouchard, but he’s not slated to get his first action this season in an Oilers uniform.
