Former Coach Pegs Oilers as Best Fit for Red Wings Star
The Edmonton Oilers have already checked off several major items on their offseason to-do list, but one glaring need still remains. After a productive July 1 that reshaped the roster, the Oilers are expected to shift their attention toward finding another top-six forward, and former NHL head coach Bruce Boudreau believes he knows exactly who that player should be.
Speaking during an appearance on Edmonton Sports Talk, Boudreau said Edmonton should make a serious push to sign veteran winger Patrick Kane, calling him an ideal fit for a team that is once again all-in on winning the Stanley Cup.
Considering everything the Oilers have accomplished over the opening days of free agency, adding Kane could be the move that completes an already impressive offseason.
Oilers Have Addressed Several Major Needs
General manager Stan Bowman entered the summer with several priorities, and so far, he has managed to address nearly all of them. The biggest storyline was moving on from Darnell Nurse, clearing significant cap space while reshaping the blue line. Edmonton quickly replaced Nurse by signing Ryan Shea, a steady, defensively responsible blueliner who should fit well into the Oilers’ new-look defensive group.

The goaltending position also received a complete overhaul. The Oilers signed veteran Frederik Andersen to provide proven playoff experience before acquiring Devon Levi, giving the organization both a reliable starter and a talented young goaltender who could become a long-term solution in net.
Edmonton also retained Kasperi Kapanen, preserving valuable forward depth and maintaining a player who proved he could contribute in multiple roles throughout last season.
After completing those moves, the Oilers now find themselves with a little over $7 million in available cap space. That flexibility gives Bowman an opportunity to pursue one final impact addition before training camp.
Patrick Kane Checks Every Box
Speaking on Edmonton Sports Talk, Boudreau explained that the Oilers still need another legitimate top-six forward, and Kane would fit perfectly into that role. Even at this stage of his career, Kane remains one of hockey’s premier playmakers. His vision, patience with the puck and ability to create offense would make him a natural fit alongside either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl.
Adding another elite offensive talent would also lessen the pressure on Edmonton’s stars while giving head coach Kris Knoblauch another dangerous scoring line capable of changing games. If the Oilers are searching for a player who can elevate their already dangerous offense, there may not be a better option still available on the free-agent market.
Familiar Faces Could Help Bring Kane to Edmonton
The Oilers also possess something few other contenders can offer: familiarity. Bowman spent years constructing championship teams around Kane during their time together with the Chicago Blackhawks, winning three Stanley Cups along the way. He knows exactly what Kane brings both on and off the ice.
Edmonton also employs Duncan Keith as a player development consultant. Keith and Kane shared one of the NHL’s greatest dynasties together in Chicago, and that long-standing relationship could become another factor if the Oilers decide to aggressively pursue the veteran winger.
A bonus-heavy one-year contract could also make sense for both sides, allowing Edmonton to maximize its remaining cap space while giving Kane an opportunity to compete for another championship.
If Kane Wants Another Stanley Cup, Edmonton Makes Sense
The expectation remains that Kane either re-signs with the Detroit Red Wings or signs with his hometown Buffalo Sabres. Both destinations offer comfort and familiarity as he enters the latter stages of his career.
However, if his top priority is winning one more Stanley Cup, few teams can offer a better opportunity than the Oilers.
Edmonton has already strengthened its roster by reshaping the defense, solidifying the crease and retaining important depth pieces. With over $7 million still available to spend, adding one more proven top-six scorer could complete one of the NHL’s strongest offseason turnarounds.

I’m pretty sure Kris Knoblauch is out and Mike Babcock is in.
