Oilers Could Bring Back Polarizing D-Man For Depth Scoring Boost

If defenseman John Klingberg remains unsigned this summer, would the Edmonton Oilers consider a reunion to add depth scoring?

If defenseman John Klingberg remains unsigned this summer, the Edmonton Oilers could do a lot worse than the offensive blueliner in a depth role. The Oilers have decided that the goal this coming season is to spread out the offense to ensure that Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard aren’t overworked. That includes finding a second-unit power play that can cash in when their ticket is called.

We wrote yesterday that Patrik Laine (yes, it would be a weird dynamic with Mike Babcock) could be a fit at forward. On the blue line, there are some elite-level power play quarterbacks in the NHL, and Klingberg has been among them.

As Chris Johnston of The Athletic writes, “Klingberg may not move as well as he once did after double hip resurfacing surgery in 2024, but he’s shown that his offensive instincts are still intact, scoring 10 goals this past season with San Jose. Klingberg’s biggest strengths are a booming shot and an ability to move the puck quickly and effectively. He can help out a power play, too.”

He made $4 million this past season with the San Jose Sharks, who, despite a lack of defensemen, decided not to re-sign him. They went and added Darnell Nurse and Jacob Trouba instead, leaving Klingberg likely looking for a different fit. He was an Oiler during the 2024-25 season, playing 11 regular-season games and another 19 in the playoffs. Could he be an Oiler again?

Not known for his defensive prowess, he can score and, if paired with the right partner, is steady enough to stay above water. He’s not a top choice, and the Oilers do have a decent top-six.

How Cheap Can a Team Get Klingberg For?

The question becomes what he’ll settle for on a new deal. If the reason Klingberg isn’t signed yet is that he wants a certain dollar figure, this won’t be a fit for Edmonton. If he’s going unsigned because teams aren’t interested, he could be a smart bet on a show-me deal or PTO.

Skating and foot speed are Klingberg’s biggest red flags. Still, the UFA had 10 goals and 27 points in just 56 games for the Sharks last season. Does he make sense on a $2 million deal?
