Oilers Calling Up Black Aces Ahead of Must-Win Game 6 vs Ducks
The Edmonton Oilers are expected to receive reinforcements ahead of a must-win Game 6 against the Anaheim Ducks, as several players from the Bakersfield Condors are set to join the team as Black Aces. With the Oilers facing elimination, these additions could provide much-needed depth and flexibility as they look to extend their season.
According to head coach Kris Knoblauch, a group of Condors players will meet the team in Anaheim following Bakersfield’s elimination from the Calder Cup playoffs. While Knoblauch did not confirm the exact names, it is widely anticipated that 7–8 players will be called upon, including Isaac “Ike” Howard, Quinn Hutson, Roby Järventie, Alec Regula, Connor Clattenburg, Viljami Marjala, and James Hamblin.
Reinforcements Arrive at a Critical Time
The timing of these call-ups couldn’t be more important. The Oilers’ depth—particularly down the middle—has been tested throughout the series. Injuries to key players like Adam Henrique and missed games from Jason Dickinson have forced the coaching staff to shuffle the lineup, while even Connor McDavid was briefly listed as a game-time decision earlier in the series.

As a result, Edmonton has been operating with a tight forward group, dressing 13 forwards and making lineup decisions based on availability rather than preference. The addition of Black Aces gives Knoblauch more options, whether it’s inserting fresh legs or having insurance in case of further injuries.
Who Could Make an Impact?
Among the expected call-ups, a few names stand out as potential contributors if called upon. Howard and Hutson bring offensive upside and creativity, while Järventie has shown flashes of scoring ability at the AHL level. Regula provides defensive depth on the blue line, an area where the Oilers could use stability given their inconsistency in the series.
Hamblin, who has NHL experience, may be the most game-ready option if the Oilers need to plug someone into the lineup quickly. His familiarity with the system and ability to play a responsible two-way game could make him a viable depth option.
Meanwhile, players like Clattenburg and Marjala add energy and speed, attributes that could be valuable against a Ducks team that has capitalized on pace and transition throughout the series.
Condors Season Ends, Opportunity Begins
The Condors were recently eliminated from the Calder Cup playoffs after a hard-fought first-round series against the Coachella Valley Firebirds. After winning Game 1 convincingly, Bakersfield dropped the next two games, including a decisive Game 3, ending their postseason run.
While the early exit is disappointing for the organization’s AHL affiliate, it opens the door for these players to gain valuable experience at the NHL level during the most intense time of the year.
Added Depth Could Be Key
Black Aces typically serve as extra bodies for practices and injury insurance, but they can also play a role in pushing the roster internally. Fresh competition in practice often elevates the intensity level, something the Oilers will need as they try to stave off elimination.
Knoblauch emphasized that having additional players available provides peace of mind, especially given the uncertainty surrounding injuries. With Game 6 looming, Edmonton now has reinforcements on the way—and potentially, a spark that could help shift momentum in their favor.
If the Oilers are to mount a comeback in this series, contributions could come from anywhere—including a group of hungry call-ups eager to make their mark.
