NHL Weekend Rumors: Michkov Questions, Lafreniere Talks, Coaching Chaos

Stay updated with the latest NHL weekend rumors, including the future of Matvei Michkov and the Flyers’ long-term vision.

In this weekend’s NHL Trade Talk rumors report, the Philadelphia Flyers are facing questions about Matvei Michkov’s future, the New York Rangers could revisit talks surrounding Alexis Lafreniere, and coaching speculation is heating up across the league, particularly in Edmonton, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Flyers Staying Patient with Michkov, Eye Zegras Move

There’s been plenty of noise surrounding Matvei Michkov, but insiders suggest the Philadelphia Flyers are not close to giving up on the young star. Elliotte Friedman noted Michkov has dealt with significant personal and professional challenges, and at his age, it’s far too early to make any drastic decisions. While some around the league question his reputation internally, the Flyers appear committed to staying patient. Michkov remains part of their long-term vision—for now.

Philadelphia’s bigger priority may be locking in Trevor Zegras. Friedman expects talks to ramp up soon, signaling the team still views Zegras as a key piece moving forward. He is a pending RFA with an expiring deal that paid him $5.75 million per season.

Rangers, Blues, and Wild Exploring Big Moves

The New York Rangers could once again explore the trade market for Alexis Lafreniere this offseason, according to David Pagnotta. It’s part of what could be a larger shakeup, as reports also suggest the Rangers are looking to move Vincent Trocheck, with the Toronto Maple Leafs among interested teams. Darren Dreger said Trocheck is on the Leafs’ radar.

Elsewhere, the St. Louis Blues are believed to be testing the market on Jordan Kyrou, though the asking price is steep. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild were aggressive at the trade deadline, reportedly offering a package that included Jesper Wallstedt and Danila Yurov for Robert Thomas.

Despite that, don’t expect the New Jersey Devils to entertain offers for Jack or Luke Hughes, even if teams like Minnesota continue to check in.

Coaching speculation continues to dominate headlines, particularly for the Edmonton Oilers. Multiple insiders suggest the team has made Bruce Cassidy their top target. Peter Laviolette or Craig Berube could also be in the mix. The sense is that Edmonton wants a stricter, win-now presence behind the bench.

There’s also uncertainty around current coach Kris Knoblauch, who may consider stepping away temporarily after a taxing stretch. In Toronto, the Maple Leafs are casting a wide net and Knoblauch could be on their list.

In Vancouver, after hiring Ryan Johnson and the Sedins as new management, Manny Malhotra is widely viewed as a leading candidate for the coaching job.

Cap Crunches and Blue-Line Targets Around the League

The Vegas Golden Knights are likely to appeal the NHL’s ruling that they forfeit a second-round draft pick after refusing their media obligations. But that’s not the only drama surrounding the team. When their season is done, they could be forced into a significant move due to cap constraints, with Tomas Hertl emerging as a possible trade candidate.

Toronto, meanwhile, is actively exploring upgrades on the blue line, with a right-shot defenseman high on the priority list. Names like Darren Raddysh and Mario Ferraro have surfaced, while management is also surveying the veteran center market. There is still a ton of chatter surrounding Morgan Rielly‘s future.

Finally, across the league, teams like Chicago, Seattle, and Florida are believed to be open to moving their draft picks.
