NHL Weekend Rumors: Maple Leafs, Canucks, Predators, Oilers

Explore the latest NHL weekend rumors including potential trades and team movements that could change the league’s landscape.

In today’s NHL Trade Talk weekend rumors report, potential front-office shakeups are brewing across the league, and the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to face uncertainty both on and off the ice. Meanwhile, the players and the President spoke in Vancouver, where the Canucks have critical decisions on the horizon. Finally, the Nashville Predators and several rebuilding clubs are positioning themselves for a busy offseason, and the Edmonton Oilers are hoping a few key players will be back.

Maple Leafs: Morgan Rielly, Mats Sundin and Other Names

The Maple Leafs remain one of the league’s most talked-about teams, and much of that centers on internal direction. According to Darren Dreger, there’s a growing sense that Morgan Rielly could be playing elsewhere next season, with reports suggesting he may now be more open to waiving his no-move clause than in previous years. “I still wanna stay. I love playing here. I love being a Maple Leaf, I believe in this organization,” Rielly said.

At the same time, leadership questions persist. Frank Seravalli described the current structure as “a mess.” Auston Matthews was unwilling to divulge anything about his future, suggesting he couldn’t possibly know until the team hired a GM and President. He seems committed to the team’s future, but only if it doesn’t become a full rebuild.

Off the ice, names like Mats Sundin and Mike Gillis have become frontrunners for front-office positions. In what capacity remains unknown.

Predators Navigating Key Decisions

In Nashville, the Predators could be rethinking their previous stance on roster moves. Elliotte Friedman noted there was significant interest in Ryan O’Reilly at the trade deadline, and while the team had previously been hesitant to move players without their consent, that approach may be evolving. Itw as said that O’Reilly was going to be treated like he had a no-move clause (even though he doesn’t.). Will that treatment continue under the new GM?

The Predators are also taking their time with their general manager search, with Pierre LeBrun indicating the organization is waiting to see what additional candidates emerge.

Devils Hire Mehta, Even Bigger Decisions Coming Now

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils have hired Sunny Mehta as their new GM, reportedly speeding up the process to get that deal done when it was learned the Toronto Maple Leafs had him on their radar.

Mehta has his work cut out for him. Following the botched Quinn Hughes situation, there is chatter that some players might want out of New Jersey.

Canucks Evaluating Roster and Leadership Direction

The Canucks continue to weigh both roster and leadership decisions after letting go of Patrik Allvin and following their end-of-season avails.

Jim Rutherford admitted that the team always knew Quinn Hughes wasn’t staying. But, in an effort to force Hughes to change his mind, the team signed Thatcher Demko, Brock Boeser, and Conor Garland to big deals. The new GM will have to deal with the fallout of those decisions. On the leadership side, the GM will also determine Adam Foote‘s future behind the bench.

Oilers Injury News

The Edmonton Oilers will hold a full practice on Sunday, which is expected to provide key updates on the status of Leon Draisaitl and Jason Dickinson ahead of Game 1 against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.

Both players are trending toward returns, with Draisaitl skating for several weeks after a lower-body injury and Dickinson recently taking part in his first on-ice work since blocking a shot. However, neither has been officially cleared to play.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch described both situations as day-to-day, noting Draisaitl could return at any point in the first round. Dickinson, meanwhile, is awaiting medical clearance and has been pushing to get back into the lineup. The Oilers remain hopeful for clarity after Sunday’s skate.

League-Wide Buzz: Coaching, Trades, and Future Changes

Elsewhere around the NHL, Pierre LeBrun suggested that changes to the league’s playoff format could eventually come, possibly after commissioner Gary Bettman steps down.

Trade speculation is also heating up, with names like Jordan Binnington, Sergei Bobrovsky, and Brady Tkachuk surfacing in various rumors.

As the offseason is here for some teams, it’s clear that multiple NHL franchises are at crossroads—whether retooling, rebuilding, or positioning themselves for a major move that could reshape their future.
