NHL Trade Talk: The Podcast – Ep. 34: Kreider Clears, Hughes Speaks, Formenton Backlash
Ep. 34 of the NHL Trade Talk: The Podcast talks Quinn Hughes’ comments, Alex Formenton to Oilers, Chris Kreider out, and Buium’s contract.
On this episode of NHL Trade Talk: The Podcast, we get into Quinn Hughes‘ comments about his contract negotiations. We talk about Alex Formenton signing with the Edmonton Oilers and if the on-ice benefits will outweigh the PR backlash. We discuss Chris Kreider being waived by the Ducks and dig into Zeev Buium‘s contract.
This week’s episode includes discussion on big news involving Quinn Hughes, Alex Formenton, Zeev Buium, and Chris Kreider.
The hosts dig into the Hughes comments and what that means for a contract extension with the Minnesota Wild. Is Hughes signing soon? Is he taking his sweet time with no regard for anyone else? In one breath, he says, “”I’m going to take my time… I’m sure we’re going to work it out.” In another, he explained, “This is going to be done whenever I feel like it needs to be done. I don’t feel backed up against a wall. I’m very thoughtful. I want to make sure I’m taking my time on everything and make sure I’m making a decision that is going to be good for everyone. That’s kind of where my head has been at…”
Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers signed Alex Formenton and the backlash from some fans was already swift. He spoke with the media about his process, but one question in Edmonton is why the Oilers made this move, given that he hasn’t been an incredibly effective player since leaving the NHL. Do they really believe he’s got something to offer?
How will the eight-year Zeev Buium contract age for the Vancouver Canucks? And, what is the fallout from the deal? Is this a Leo Carlsson situation, but in a slightly different way?
Finally, what happens with Chris Kreider now that he’s cleared waivers? The Anaheim Ducks waived him to clear cap space, and which teams might be interested in the forward?
