NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Crosby Rising, Leafs, Senators

In our NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 10), Crosby is now 9th in all-time scoring, and the Maple Leafs and Senators lose big.

After a huge game by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby, welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 10). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. Crosby reached a milestone and now sits in ninth place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. However, he’s only one of three key stories we’re following.

Crosby Makes History as Penguins Top Oilers 5-3

Crosby reached a milestone last night by scoring a goal and adding two assists in his Penguins’ 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. With these points, Crosby jumped into ninth place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. His career totals sit at 604 goals and 1039 assists for 1643 points in 1315 games. Crosby now trails the great Penguins legend Mario Lemieux by only 80 points for eighth on the NHL’s career scoring list. He’s in heady company.

Crosby’s goal was his 12th goal of the season. It pushed the Penguins to a 5-1 lead. The Oilers eventually got back into the game, led by Connor McDavid‘s three assists and Leon Draisaitl‘s two goals. However, for the Oilers, it was too little and too late. In the end, Edmonton couldn’t score enough to make up for their shakey start.

Staal’s Hat Trick Ends Leafs’ Win Streak in 6-3 Hurricanes Victory

The Toronto Maple Leafs saw their five-game win streak snapped in a 6-3 loss to the Hurricanes last night. Jordan Staal registered the fourth hat trick of his 19-year NHL career to lead his team. The Maple Leafs started the game like they would win going away. Both Nick Robertson and William Nylander scored in the first period. But Carolina’s aggressive forecheck proved too much.

Auston Matthews tied the game 3-3 with a power-play goal, but then the game slipped away. Goalie Joseph Woll allowed five goals on 34 shots (the sixth Hurricanes goal was scored into an empty net) in a rare off night for him.

Senators’ Nick Cousins Fined for Elbowing in Win Over Sabres

In our third NHL roundup, the Ottawa Senators have lost four games in a row, suffering a 4-0 shutout at the hands of the Buffalo Sabres. After the game, forward Nick Cousins was fined $2,083.33 for elbowing Sabres defenseman Jacob Bryson. The fine is the maximum allowed under the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The NHL’s Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund receives the funds from the fine.

For the Senators, the loss was their fourth in a row. These losses have ended the hot steak Ottawa was on previously. Does it put an end to their playoff hopes? Will they have to make a trade or other moves to save their season? How different a week can make.
