NHL Trade Talk Recap: Tkachuk Podcast, Nylander’s Future, Jarry Offseason
Long time players want to stay, short term players might be on the move, and a podcast might tear down a franchise.
Thursday’s NHL news featured a mix of loyalty, uncertainty, and controversy. One player made it clear he wants to stay put, another may be on his way out this summer, and a podcast moment added some off-ice drama.
William Nylander says he’d like to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but that could change if the team decides to commit to a full rebuild. In Edmonton, one report wonders whether the Oilers could move on from Tristan Jarry this offseason.
Meanwhile, the Tkachuk brothers made headlines for the wrong reasons after comments on their podcast led to an awkward situation involving a teammate already under pressure.
Nylander Wants to Stay… Unless
There has been a lot of talk recently about the changing of the guard in Toronto. But with Auston Matthews and William Nylander at the top of retool conversations, it might be time to ask them if they want to stay. The Athletic cited comments from an interview in which Nylander said that if the team doesn’t want to go full rebuild, he definitely wants to stay.

So Nylander is in. What about Auston Matthews? That question is just as important. A decision by Matthews to move on would likely trigger a domino effect, forcing others—Nylander included—to reevaluate their futures in Toronto.
The 29-year-old Nylander is in the second season of the eight-year, $92 million extension he signed with the Maple Leafs in 2024, a deal that includes a full no-move clause. Matthews holds similar control in his contract, giving both stars significant say over their long-term futures with the team.
For now, the situation remains fluid. Much will depend on how the organization approaches the offseason and whether its core players stay aligned. One way or another, it’s shaping up to be a pivotal and potentially exciting summer in Toronto.

The Oilers Might be Already to Move on From Jarry
The Oilers acquired goaltender Tristan Jarry in December, and while the move hasn’t delivered the results they hoped for, it’s still too early to draw any firm conclusions. Injuries and inconsistent play have limited Jarry’s impact, and he’s since been overtaken on the depth chart by former third-stringer Connor Ingram.
Speculation is beginning to surface. Jeremy Tingley of NHL Trade Rumours recently included Jarry on a list of three goalies who could potentially be moved this offseason. That’s notable given how recently Edmonton made the trade and the assets they gave up to acquire him.
That said, the situation isn’t necessarily at the point where a move feels inevitable. The Oilers may simply be evaluating their options as they head toward the offseason.
Jarry, 30, is in the third year of the five-year, $26.875 million deal he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023. His contract includes a modified 12-team no-trade list, which could complicate any potential move.
For now, Edmonton’s focus is likely on getting Jarry back on track (he picked up a win on Thursday). If he can find some consistency down the stretch and settle into a reliable role, the conversation around his future could look very different. If not, it’s fair to expect his name to remain part of offseason speculation—but not necessarily a certainty to be moved.

Tkachuk Podcast Creates Awkward Situation
The Tkachuks have had a pretty interesting last couple of months in terms of PR. They have once again been in the news, this time over comments their father made on the “Wingmen” podcast about Brady’s teammate, Linus Ullmark.

The two Senators players were both requested by the team to speak with the media ahead of Thursday night’s matchup against the Buffalo Sabres, but were unavailable, according to the Senators.
Keith made comments calling modern players soft for how they handle injuries. Keith also said he was disgusted by the Senators. This was followed by Brady awkwardly laughing and Matthew attempting to change the subject.
While it’s fun to joke about, the strange thing is that he is not lying. This strain might have long-term effects on the Ottawa Senators, especially if the tension escalates into something bigger, like a trade. People have already been talking about Brady’s future with the team, and this situation has stoked the fire. Sens fans will look to the offseason with bated breath, hoping that this situation can be resolved by trading their franchise cornerstone.
