NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Oilers & Trade Request Controversy
Jack Roslovic is thriving in Toronto, McDavid is chasing history, and NHL players are questioning who should control trade requests.
Today’s NHL Trade Talk roundup (October 24, 2026) has Jack Roslovic lighting it up with the Maple Leafs after learning a thing or two in Edmonton. Connor McDavid is putting up “video game” numbers that have Gretzky’s record in danger. And Elliotte Friedman heard some surprising stuff from players about whether teams should get more say on trade requests.

Roslovic Is Thriving in Toronto After Learning the Oilers Way
Jack Roslovic has been a blast to watch in Toronto. After leaving the Oilers, he’s piled up 10 points in 12 games riding shotgun with Matthews. He’s playing more than he did in Edmonton. He says his time with the Oilers taught him a ton about work ethic and culture.
The big question is whether he can keep it going once the games tighten up in the playoffs. Coaches haven’t always trusted him in the postseason. Nail that, and the Leafs got themselves a bargain.

McDavid Is Playing “Video Game” Hockey and Gretzky’s Record Is in Danger
Connor McDavid has 31 points in just 10 games (8 goals, 23 assists), putting him on pace for around 260 points. He’s also only the second player ever, after Mario Lemieux, with three five-point games in the first 10 of a season. Zach Hyman called the numbers “video game” territory and says nobody thought anyone could do this stuff, though he admits the pace probably won’t last.
Even with Leon Draisaitl at 176 points in his own pace, McDavid is way out in front. Hyman says he’s still humble and cares only about the team’s 8-1-1 start, and Leafs rookie Gavin McKenna said he expects five points from him every night.

Players Are Quietly Asking: Should Teams Get More Say on Trade Requests?
Elliotte Friedman says he was blown away after a few NHL players privately told him teams should have more options when a player asks for a trade. Players usually lead the charge in defending their right to control their own path, so hearing this caught him off guard. The chatter is bubbling up in dressing rooms, especially after the Hellebuyck and Larkin situations.
Larkin keeps expanding his list of acceptable teams (now 10) and still hasn’t been moved, while Brad Marchand has pushed back on limiting how players use their no-trade clauses. Gary Bettman even hinted the NHL might have to talk to the NHLPA about it, since those clauses were meant to protect players, not let them handpick new teams.
