NHL Trade Talk Recap: Jets, Maple Leafs & Oilers’ Patient GM
Connor Hellebuyck’s suspension escalates Winnipeg’s standoff, Ryan Reaves retires, and the OIlers take a patient approach to Matt Savoie.
Today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap for September 16, 2026, takes a quick look at three stories making waves around the league. A trade standoff that’s officially gotten messy, a legend calling it a career on his own terms, and a GM who might’ve quietly outsmarted the market by just staying patient.

The Jets Just Suspended Hellebuyck — And This Standoff Just Got Real
Things just escalated fast in Winnipeg. The Jets officially suspended Connor Hellebuyck for missing training camp, turning an already awkward holdout into a genuine, no-turning-back standoff. Insider Chris Johnston says the odds of the two sides actually patching things up are sitting around 13%. That tells you basically everyone’s dug in now. Hellebuyck’s losing salary every day he stays away, and Winnipeg’s holding firm on wanting real value back before they’ll make a move.
The whole situation is pretty rare for the NHL. Johnston pointed out he can’t remember many cases of a player demanding out, sitting out, then just quietly returning as if nothing happened, and a suspension only makes that outcome less likely here. With trade offers reportedly weak and no team seeming desperate to jump in, this one’s not close to resolved. It’s shaping up to be one of the messier standoffs the league’s seen in a while.

“The Corners Are a Little Safer Today” — Ryan Reaves Calls It a Career
After 16 seasons and 962 games, Ryan Reaves is officially calling it a career, and he made the announcement as memorably as his playing days. In a heartfelt Instagram letter, he opened up about being drawn to physical, hard-nosed hockey since he was a kid, admitting he never expected that same kid, the one who just wanted to “lay people out,” would end up playing 16 years in the NHL. He capped it all off with the kind of line only Reaves could pull off: “the corners are a little safer today… mic drop, gloves drop, Reavo out.”
Tributes soon rolled in from around the league. Mitch Marner and Max Domi, both former Leafs teammates, sent their well-wishes, and fellow tough guy Sheldon Souray joked that a round of golf with Reaves was somehow riskier than an actual hockey game against him. As for what’s next, Reaves says he’d like to stay close to the sport somehow, whether that’s in broadcasting or working in a front office. Either way, this was a genuinely fitting sendoff, funny and heartfelt, for one of hockey’s most colourful characters.

Bowman’s Not Sweating the Savoie Contract Situation — And There Might Be a Reason Why
Stan Bowman doesn’t have a firm timeline for Matt Savoie’s return from injury. But he sounds genuinely relaxed about it, especially on the contract side. He acknowledged the whole salary landscape has shifted fast, with a bunch of big deals getting rushed through before a recent CBA deadline. Still, he’s confident things will sort themselves out with Savoie in due time. He also made a point of praising how much Savoie’s game elevated in the second half of last season, especially after the Olympic break.
Here’s the interesting twist. Edmonton’s not rushing to lock Savoie up before that CBA deadline chaos might actually work in their favour. With so many GMs scrambling to get deals done before the cutoff, prices got a little inflated across the league. Now that things are settling down, Edmonton could negotiate from a calmer, cheaper position. They won’t get caught up in the panic pricing everyone else just paid.
