NHL Trade Talk Recap: Canadiens, Canucks, & Oilers Retirement
The NHL Trade Talk Recap has a little of everything: a Kreider bargain, a Hughes warning for Minnesota, and Ingram’s classy goodbye.
Today’s roundup contains a bit of everything in our NHL Trade Talk Recap (September 12, 2026). There was a nice value signing in Montreal, a cautionary tale brewing in Minnesota, and a classy goodbye from an Edmonton goalie who’s earned plenty of respect around the league.

The Canadiens Just Landed Kreider — And It’s a Pretty Great Bargain
Well, this one came out of nowhere — Chris Kreider is officially a Canadien now. He signed a cheap one-year deal worth $2.15 million, up to $3 million with bonuses, just days after his Anaheim contract got mutually terminated. That’s a rare thing to see in the NHL, where both sides basically shook hands and agreed it was time to go their separate ways. Anaheim needed the cap room for its youth movement, and Kreider wanted a real shot at playing meaningful hockey somewhere else.
Montreal moved fast, and it’s easy to see why. Kreider’s still good for 22 goals and 28 assists a season, and even at 36, he’s still one of the toughest net-front presences to deal with in the league. That’s a perfect match for the quick, aggressive game Montreal’s building with its young core. For basically pocket change, the Habs picked up a proven scorer who’s hit 20 goals plenty of times, adding real veteran experience without any long-term commitment. Feels like a win for everybody — Anaheim clears cap space, Kreider gets a new lease on his career, and Montreal might’ve just snagged one of the sneakiest good signings of the summer.

Are the Wild About to Repeat Vancouver’s Biggest Mistake?
Here’s the part of the Quinn Hughes story people keep glossing over. Vancouver wasn’t blindsided when he left. Former team president Jim Rutherford has admitted the organization actually knew he wasn’t staying before last season even started, and they spent real money anyway trying to change his mind. They signed guys like Brock Boeser, Thatcher Demko, and Conor Garland partly because of their friendships with Hughes. That’s not a front office getting caught off guard. That’s a front office knowing the truth and choosing to spend around it instead.
Now Hughes is in Minnesota and the noise about wanting to eventually join his brothers in New Jersey hasn’t gone away. GM Bill Guerin’s early public tone sounds a lot like Vancouver’s did. There’s plenty of confidence about the relationship, not a lot of real certainty about the outcome. With Hughes entering the final year of his deal and openly saying he’s not rushing anything, the real question for Minnesota isn’t how to convince him to stay. It’s whether they’re honestly preparing for the chance that he’s already leaning elsewhere. Or are they just hoping really hard the way Vancouver did. Because if it’s the second one, this isn’t a new story. It’s the same one with a different logo on the jersey.

Ingram Is Walking Away From Hockey — And He’s Got a Plan for What’s Next
Connor Ingram announced his retirement on Instagram with a message that hit just right. Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened. Honestly, it caught a lot of people off guard. He’d played well in Edmonton and still couldn’t land a new deal, and nobody else came calling either. Whatever the actual reason, Ingram seems at peace with it and reportedly wants to go back to school, hoping to use what he’s learned in hockey to help others down the road.
His career had some real highlights. He won the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2023-24 for perseverance and dedication to the game. That award took on even more meaning when he later entered the NHL’s Player Assistance Program. He got healthy, got traded to Edmonton, and had a solid final run before it all wrapped up here. A tough goodbye for a guy who clearly earned plenty of respect around the league, on and off the ice.
