NHL Trade Talk Recap: Blues, Oilers, Canadiens & Big Money

Bringing Kyrou to McDavid? Intriguing fit but risky. Canadiens battle Bell Centre pressure, while Bobrovsky could reset goalie market.

This edition (May 24, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three quick takes. Kyrou might look electric next to McDavid, but his inconsistency, playoff questions, big contract, and steep trade price make him a risky splash for Edmonton. Montreal’s problem isn’t talent, but the Bell Centre pressure. And Bobrovsky chasing a long-term, high-dollar deal could ripple through the goalie market.

Kyrou + McDavid Looks Cool on Paper, but Is the Trade Worth the Gamble?

Kyrou’s speed and offensive flair make him an enticing target he can skate with McDavid and has multiple 70-point seasons. But his recent dip to 46 points and streaky, inconsistent play raise real doubts about whether he’d bring the playoff grit Edmonton needs. His limited postseason résumé and uneven production make him a risky fit for a team chasing championships.

The money and return can be scary. Kyrou’s got a large, long-term deal, and the Blues will want top prospects and picks, which could leave Edmonton short on fixing the real problems (defence and goalie). He’s a legit top-six guy, so sure, check him out if the price falls. But right now, he’s more sizzle than sure-fire fix.

Oilers Should Be Cautious on Trade Rumours with Blues

Canadiens Need to Play for the Process, Not the Applause

Home crowds lift the Canadiens. But when players start trying to perform for fans instead of playing the simple, disciplined hockey that wins, passes get fancy, and mistakes creep in. Coach Martin St. Louis is basically saying: breathe, stop chasing the show, and just do the basic, clean stuff that works on the road.

If Montreal can treat Bell Centre games like road games mentally — fewer theatrics, crisper breakouts, smarter decisions — the crowd still gets wins. And the team avoids self-inflicted turnovers. Channel the energy into focus, not pressure, and the results should follow.

Bobrovsky Wants Big Money: That Could Mess Up the Goalie Market

Bobrovsky’s playoff resume and recent success give him the clout to ask for a hefty, long-term deal, but at 36–37 and coming off a so-so season, handing him big term and dollars is a risky bet for any team. If he lands a big contract, it’ll push up expectations and prices for every other goalie and ripple through teams’ roster plans.

For clubs like the Oilers, that’s bad news. Signing him could blow cap space and spark demands from other vets and goalies (Skinner, Ingram, Andersen) who’d point to Bobrovsky’s deal as precedent. If he gets paid too much, the market tightens. If he doesn’t, teams chasing him might be out of luck. Either way, it shakes up summer negotiations.
