NHL Trade Talk Recap: Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, Flyers & Oilers
Bedard nears his Blackhawks return, the Maple Leafs’ speed is trending up, and the Oilers could explore a Flyers trade if things worsen.
Today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap for October 12, 2026, has plenty to chew on. Connor Bedard is getting ready to make his season debut for the Blackhawks after being out since April. The Maple Leafs are skating faster than last year, and early tracking numbers back up what fans have been seeing on the ice. Meanwhile, the Flyers are off to a 0-5-2 start, and the Oilers are already being linked to Owen Tippett if Philadelphia decides to shake things up.

Captain Connor Bedard Is Ready to Make His Season Debut for the Blackhawks
Connor Bedard looks set to make his season debut Tuesday against Pittsburgh. He’s been out since April and is about three months removed from his shoulder surgery in July, but he says he feels normal and comfortable with contact and battles. Coach Jeff Blashill says he’s trending toward playing, and ESPN’s Emily Kaplan called it a huge boost for Chicago.
He practised Monday on a line with Roman Kantserov and Patrick Kane, and the Bedard-Kane pairing has fans excited. Blashill admitted it’s not easy to jump back in without game action, but this time the shoulder is in a great spot, and he doesn’t have the restrictions he had last year. For a Blackhawks team that’s started the year without its new captain, his return can’t come soon enough.

The Maple Leafs Are Skating Faster This Season, and the Numbers Back It Up
Toronto looks quicker this year, and the early NHL EDGE tracking numbers agree. The Maple Leafs are already ahead of last season in every speed category: 10 bursts over 22 mph (up from seven), 128 bursts between 20 and 22 mph (up from 117), and 638 bursts between 18 and 20 mph (up from 539). It matches what you see on the ice: players close gaps faster, recover from mistakes, and spend more time in the other team’s end.
The author says speed helps a team build a new identity, since faster skating gives you more options to pressure the puck and turn loose pucks into chances. The caveat is a small sample size, and skating fast doesn’t guarantee good decisions or wins. But after a season where the Leafs sometimes looked too careful, this looks like a team moving with a little more purpose.

Could the Oilers Pounce on Owen Tippett if the Flyers Blow It Up?
Philadelphia is off to an ugly 0-5-2 start, and if things don’t turn around, the Flyers could start making changes. The Oilers have come up as a possible suitor, with winger Owen Tippett (six years left at $6.2 million a season) emerging as a name fans are tossing around online. Some Oilers fans want to aim higher, like Travis Konecny or Matvei Michkov, but others worry a long contract like Tippett’s could complicate the McDavid re-signing.
For now, it’s all speculation. Edmonton is tight on cap space, doesn’t have many appealing assets to offer, and is still unbeaten in regulation while getting Hyman, Nugent-Hopkins and Savoie back soon. Once the lineup is healthy and Bowman has a clearer idea of what the team actually needs, a move might make more sense, but there’s no rush right now.
