NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Jets, Leafs, Hawks, Canes & Avs
NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 25), Jets beat Utah, Leafs Knies is out, Quillan debuts, Hall’s potential with the Hurricanes.
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 25). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. In today’s roundup, the Winnipeg Jets beat Utah last night. There’s an injury report from the Toronto Maple Leafs, with news that Jacob Quillan will make his NHL debut tonight against the Ottawa Senators. But perhaps the biggest news is the blockbuster trade between the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, and Colorado Avalanche. In that trade, Taylor Hall might seem like an afterthought. Today, we’ll explore his potential with the Canes.
Cole Perfetti‘s Hat Trick Pulls Jets to 5-2 Win Over Utah
Cole Perfetti scored his first NHL hat trick as the Winnipeg Jets cooled off the Utah Hockey Club with a 5-2 win. In a Jets’ milestone, Nikolaj Ehlers registered his 500th NHL point in the win.
Ehlers became the first Denmark-born player in NHL history to score 500 points. With the win, the Jets are tied with the Washington Capitals (33-10-5) for the most wins in the NHL. However, the Capitals have two games in hand. Perfetti’s hat trick was the fifth by a Jets player on the season, which ties them with the Colorado Avalanche for the most by one team.
Don’t Forget Taylor Hall in the Blockbuster Three-Team Trade
In last night’s blockbuster between the Carolina Hurricanes, the Colorado Avalanche, and the Chicago Blackhawks, it might be easy to forget that Taylor Hall was a part of the package moving to the Canes. Hall could be a difference-maker. He brings speed, ranking in the 86th percentile for 20+ mph bursts. He won the 2018 Hart Trophy and remains a great skater with offensive upside. He’s a player to watch and could provide Carolina with some additional oomph on their power play.

Matthew Knies Out for Saturday’s Game, Bobby McMann In
In our final NHL roundup story, the injury report from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matthew Knies is sidelined with an upper-body injury, day to day. As a result of the injury, Bobby McMann will replace him on the team’s first line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.
Maple Leafs fans should watch Jacob Quillan make his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs on Saturday. Quillan is a high-energy player who isn’t afraid of board battles. If Toronto fans want to compare him to current players, he might be a cross between Calle Jarnkrok and Connor Dewar.
