Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 20). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. In today’s roundup, we share news that Connor McDavid will have a hearing from the NHL league office. As well, two Canadian teams continued their hot play. The Montreal Canadiens bounced back, and the Ottawa Senators won again.

Connor McDavid Likely Faces Suspension, But For How Long?

After a chippy end to Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid now faces a hearing for cross-checking Conor Garland. The incident occurred late in the third period of his team’s loss when Garland tackled him and held him out of the offensive play while the Oilers were frantically trying to score.

McDavid, who received a match penalty, now faces discipline by the NHL’s league office. A big part of the discussion was whether or not all of this could have been avoided. How much responsibility should the officials take for letting the game get out of control?

Laine’s Overtime Goal Lifts Canadiens Past Rangers

Patrik Laine is having a strong season with the Montreal Canadiens. On Sunday, he scored in overtime to push his Canadiens to a 5-4 win. The second hero for Montreal was young goalie Jakub Dobes, who earned his fifth straight win in his first five NHL starts.

What a start for the young Czech goalie. Dobes dedicated the win to his father, who attended his game. On the season, Dobes has been outstanding. He now has posted an impressive record of five wins with zero losses. He now has a 1.55 goals-against average and a 0.940 save percentage.

Goalie Forsberg Shines in Senators’ 2-1 Win Over Devils

Ottawa Senators goalie Anton Forsberg made 25 saves to earn his first win in two months to beat the New Jersey Devils. Senators Zack Ostapchuk, a 21-year-old depth center who played his 32nd game of the season, scored his first NHL goal in the win. With the win, the Senators extended their solid stretch of wins. They are now 5-0-1 in their last six games and sit in a playoff position.
