NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Canucks, Flames, Canadiens Bench Laine
NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Feb 3), Canucks lose in overtime, Flames win again on the road, Canadiens lose fifth straight game
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (February 3). Each morning, we’ll bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL.
In today’s roundup, the Vancouver Canucks lost in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings, although newcomer Filip Chytil looked strong in his Canucks’ debut. The Calgary Flames won on the road in Seattle when newcomer Morgan Frost scored. And, as quickly as it came, it went for the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs lost their fifth straight game to fall out of the postseason picture – at least for now.
DeBrincat’s OT Winner Lifts Red Wings Over Canucks
The Detroit Red Wings Alex DeBrincat is used to scoring overtime goals. He did it again last night to lead his team to a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks. The win pushes the Red Wings streak to six wins in a row.
There’s some good news for the Canucks. Filip Chytil, who came in the J.T. Miller trade, looked energized. “When I heard the news that I’m coming here, I was very excited,” he told Canucks reporter Dan Murphy. Chytil scored in his Canucks debut. He said of his first goal: “It meant a lot to me. In that moment, so many emotions in my head. I want to build on that and keep working hard every day.”
Morgan Frost Scores First Goal with Flames in 3-2 Win
Morgan Frost hit the ice running (or skating) by scoring his first goal with the Calgary Flames in their 3-2 win over the Seattle Kraken. The Flames Yegor Sharangovich also scored a goal and added an assist in the Flames’ win. Seattle goalie Joey Daccord made 32 saves, but the Kraken fell to the Flames on home ice.
For the Flames, Jonathan Huberdeau scored his 20th of the season. It is the first time he’s reached the 20-goal mark in three seasons with the Flames.

Canadiens Lose Again, As Ducks Mount Third-Period Surge
After a huge run that put them into playoff contention, the Montreal Canadiens have fallen hard. Last night, the Anaheim Ducks Alex Killorn scored a goal and added an assist in his team’s 3-2 win. Mason McTavish, who seems to have regained his form, extended his scoring streak with a key goal in the comeback.
The Canadiens have lost their fifth straight and fall out of the postseason picture. Questions will start shifting to what the Canadiens do at the trade deadline. Will they officially become sellers if they lose a couple more games? If so, who is on the trade block?
Coach Martin St. Louis benched Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach in the third period of Sunday’s loss to the Ducks. It’s clear this season isn’t just about winning but sending important messages and building the right habits for long-term success. “The effort has to be there,” the coach said, “but the brain has to be there, too.”
