NHL Trade Deadline Primer: What The Canadian Teams Are Up To

As we take a look at the Canadian teams heading into the trade deadline, we’ll take a more detailed glance at what each team might be up to.

Calgary Flames In Or Out?

One team that’s teetering is the Calgary Flames. Only a couple points out of the race, the games remaining is a huge flag. If the Flames don’t start putting some wins together, they could be essentially out of it by Monday’s deadline. They lost another big game on Friday night versus the Boston Bruins. They scored three record-breaking quick goals, only to let Boston score four unanswered for the win. It was not a good look.

There’s been a lot of talk about the cap space the Flames have and their desire to use it. That said, some of the names the Flames were rumored to be after went in other deals, specifically Tyler Toffoli to the Vancouver Canucks.

GM Brad Treliving said Thursday he’s been talking to other general managers, but noted he does not expect to make a franchise-altering move before the deadline. As per TSN, “Treliving is out to fill two holes: a right-shooting, top-six forward and depth on the blueline. The complicating factor is both T.J. Brodie and Travis Hamonic are pending UFAs.”

If the team could just get back some of their injured defenseman, it would certainly help.

Vancouver Canucks Got More Up Their Sleeve?

After adding Tyler Toffoli, is there more coming out of Vancouver? Questions about cap space create real doubt the team can actually make other moves. Most of the buzz is that Vancouver has interest in Wayne Simmonds out of New Jersey. It’s just hard to imagine where the money comes from the make it work. New Jersey would have to retain about half of Simmonds’ contract.

There’s more news coming out of Friday that the Canucks and Maple Leafs might be talking a deal that would include Tyson Barrie. Troy Stecher & Sven Baerstchi would be going the other way.

What’s the scoop with Brock Boeser? Is he going to be back? Is he out longer-term? What about Micheal Ferland? Can he actually help the team if he comes back?

Ottawa Senators: How Much Will They Do?

The Senators could be among the busier of teams or do close to nothing. Word is the team is just starting negotiations with Jean-Gabriel Pageau and if that turns into an extension, the real reason people are watching the Sens so closely is essentially gone.

We previously mentioned Tyler Ennis as a pending UFA that could move. There’s a good chance that happens and word is the Edmonton Oilers are close on a deal to acquire him.

Winnipeg Jets Not Likely to Repeat Previous Deadlines

In the past, the Winnipeg Jets were a team fans could count on to do something big at the deadline. Previous years saw them add Paul Stastny and Kevin Hayes. This season, they settled for Cody Eakin and gave up a fourth-rounder instead of a first. Are they necessarily done? Maybe not, but to expect them to spend another first isn’t likely.

One of the bigger questions is whether or not the team moves Dustin Byfuglien. If they don’t, it won’t be for a lack of trying. Choosing not to terminate his deal yet, the Jets are hoping to salvage something for a player who probably won’t return this season, even in the playoffs. If a team kicks tires, it’s because they believe they can coax Big Buff into coming back next season and there’s still a player there.

The Jets are still looking for a defenseman. There aren’t a ton of options left though.
