In today’s NHL rumours we look at the Edmonton Oilers who may be eyeing the Detroit Red Wings management team, the Buffalo Sabres saga with extending the contract of Jeff Skinner the Anaheim Ducks shutting down Ryan Kesler for the season and the New York Islanders possibly trading Nick Leddy for a top-six forward.

Ken Holland to The Edmonton Oilers?

According to Elliotte Friedman in his latest 31 Thoughts column, the Edmonton Oilers have interest in hiring Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland. This is, assuming the Red Wings and Holland part way and Steve Yzerman comes to Detroit from Tampa Bay.

Holland has a ton of experience and connection with Bob Nicholson from his Hockey Canada Days. He may even be a guy the Oilers can talk to prior to the end of the season considering the Red Wings are not in a playoff spot.

In the meantime, Keith Gretzky is the interim GM and the Oilers organization just announced that he’ll be running the team into the NHL Draft. Meaning, Edmonton won’t likely have a new GM named by that time.

Also in Edmonton, Jim Matheson says the Oilers could look at some of the older European free agents that might be able to step right into their lineup.

Sabres Looking at Changes?

Elliotte Friedman was on Sportsnet 590 and suggested the delay in an extension between the Buffalo Sabres and Jeff Skinner seems to be the length of term combined with the dollar figure Skinner is seeking. Skinner as much as $9 million per season and the Sabres aren’t prepared to pay that much for someone who is streaky and lacked consistency this season.

Even though this 2018-19 campaign may turn out to be Skinner’s best in the NHL, he’s only got six goals in his last 25 games and his high numbers are almost all from the first half of the season. This could lead to the Sabres justifying saying goodbye to Skinner in the summer.

If Skinner continues to slowly end his season, the number he’ll receive on his next contract will go down. The Sabres are best to wait it out.

Ryan Kesler Out for Rest of NHL Season?

Anaheim Ducks GM and coach Bob Murray told Elliott Teaford of the Orange County Register that he might just choose to sit Ryan Kesler for the remainder of the season. When asked about his status after Friday’s morning skate, he said, “If he were willing to do that, that would be fine. We’ll see.”

Kesler hasn’t been terribly productive this season and the Ducks certainly won’t miss him. There was a rumor they asked him to waive his no-trade clause a while back to which he declined.

Islanders Could Move Nick Leddy

Arthur Staple of The Athletic writes that the New York Islanders might be willing to move Nick Leddy this offseason. At only 28 years old next week, he would have some value around the NHL and could fetch a top-six forward.

Speculation is the Islanders might want to pursue either Matt Duchene or Artemi Panarin in free agency and moving Leddy would free up some cap space. If the Islanders do choose to move him, the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets might be interested.
