NHL Rumors: Devils, Kings, Trade Deadline Targets

In today’s NHL rumors and news, there are early trade deadline candidates, buzz surrounding Jonathan Quick and questions in Dallas.

In today’s NHL rumors and news update, the New Jersey Devils have locked up one of their young core but there are rumors they might be talking to the Los Angeles Kings who are looking to move Jonathan Quick. Pierre LeBrun lists his early trade deadline targets and how long before the Dallas Stars make a move?

Devils Sign Hischier Long-Term

With all the talk surrounding Taylor Hall these days, the New Jersey Devils locked up a positive piece of business by signing one of their stars of the future. Talented forward Nico Hischier is now under contract for the next seven seasons after this one.

Sportsnet reported that general manager Ray Shero inked Hischier to a seven-year, $50.75-million deal on Friday. Part of the reason for the timing of the deal is because teams are wanting to lock up restricted free agents well before the offseason to avoid similar delays like the ones that happened for many teams this year. The other, is that in New Jersey’s case, every young talent that stays is more reason for Hall to give the team a longer look.

Through 157 career games, Hischier has 37 goals and 101 points.

LeBrun Lists His Potential Trade Deadline Targets

Speaking of the Devils and Taylor Hall, Hall heads up LeBrun’s list of players who might be targets at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline.

LeBrun writes in his latest Athletic column that while February 24th’s deadline is months away, some names are already starting to present themselves as options.

Besides Hall, LeBrun mentions Ilya Kovalchuk, Erik Gudbranson, Vladislav Namestnikov, Ryan Murray, Marco Scandella, Chris Kreider, and Kyle Turris as early favorites.

The most unlikely moves are Kovalchuk, who has a no-move clause and massive salary, and Turris who is making $6 million per season but playing fourth line minutes. The good news is, Turris is starting to produce this season.

Jonathan Quick Dilemma in LA

With the inability by the Los Angeles Kings to find a home for Quick this offseason in trade and struggles early on to get his game back, the play of goaltenders like Jack Campbell isn’t helping Quick’s case.

The Kings are realizing they need to try and move the netminder. There are whispers the Kings might consider a buyout but that’s not a smart financial decision. The other option is taking a bad contract back in trade which is not something the team is keen to do either.

There were rumors of a possible trade between the Kings and Devils that could include Corey Schneider but the Devils have shot down any buzz they have interest in moving Schneider.

The Stars Have to Do Something

With the continued struggle by the Dallas Stars, how soon before they make a major move? Could Jamie Benn be in play? There were rumors last year that the team might consider moving him and Dallas was a playoff contender.

With as bad as the team has been out of the gate, don’t be shocked if someone big is on the trade block before long. He’s certainly become somewhat of a whipping boy for the fans who are expecting a lot more from him.
