NHL Rumors: Canucks, Panthers, Senators, Oilers, More

In today’s NHL rumors, why did the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Arizona Coyotes, and others do practically nothing at the NHL Trade Deadline?

In today’s NHL rumors, we look at teams that didn’t do much during Monday’s NHL trade deadline proceedings. While the Columbus Blue Jackets did almost all the heavy lifting, teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Arizona Coyotes, and others did practically nothing.

So too, were there any teams that took big swings but missed?

Behind the Scenes on the Mark Stone Deal

Most people were surprised to see how long it took for Mark Stone to get moved at yesterday’s deadline. TSN insiderBob McKenzie said during an interview with Vancouver’s TSN 1040, that this was because the Winnipeg Jets threw a wrench into a lot of team’s plans.

McKenzie explained, “Things took a turn for the worse for Ottawa and a turn for the better for Vegas when Winnipeg just decided, ‘You know what? It’s going to be too rich for our blood. We’d rather do Kevin Hayes and a whole bunch of depth deals.”

The Senators weren’t getting the offers they wanted. Most teams were throwing out a first-round pick but not with an A+ prospect. Ottawa was holding out hoping someone would do so but when Winnipeg steered the ship toward Hayes, other teams realized the price could drop. Then, as the hours wound down, Vegas made a final offer that included Erik Brannstrom.

There were other teams that offered packages as well. Dale Tallon said the Florida Panthers were in and thought they’d made a strong offer but it wasn’t enough. The New York Islanders were rumored to have stepped up and offered a first-round pick along with Anthony Beauvillier but Stone wasn’t ready to agree to an extension.

Vancouver Staying Patient

Via an interview with TSN Radio Vancouver, Canucks GM Jim Benning asked Canucks fans to stay patient. He explained the lack of movement on Monday is simply that, “We’re going to draft and develop and we’re going to develop this thing piece-by-piece so we can be competitive for a long time.”

But, behind the scenes, there was some action in Vancouver. Dan Murphy reports that Jonathan Dahlen is unhappy with how quickly he’s rising through the system and his agent has relayed the message he’d like to be traded. Murphy also reports that the Canucks spoke to Alex Edler about waiving his no-trade clause but he was unwilling to do so. Vancouver and Edler are now back to trying to work out an extension.

Arizona Coyotes Weren’t Happy With Options

Dave Vest is reporting that GM of the Arizona Coyotes, John Chayka said there were no deals that made sense for the Coyotes on Monday. Any deal the team could have made meant moving out players they didn’t want to subtract from the lineup.

Red Wings Want to Extend Jimmy Howard

The Detroit Red Wings chose to hang onto Jimmy Howard on Monday and Ansar Khan of MLive is reporting, that’s because the team is hoping to re-sign him for another two seasons.

“We basically agreed we’d get to the trade deadline and see if anybody was looking for a goaltender,” GM Ken Holland said. “I’ll sit down with (Howard’s agent) in the next week or two.”

In other Red Wings news, the team is looking at an extension for head coach Jeff Blashill and while there was interest in defenseman Niklas Kronwall, he informed the team he didn’t want to leave so Detroit stopped entertaining the idea of moving him.

Oilers Chose to Stand Pat

Interim GM of the Edmonton Oilers said in a media avail on Monday that the Oilers had a couple options available, namely for Alex Chiasson, but chose not to make any moves.

There were rumors the Oilers tried to land Connor Brown and buzz on the deal ranged anywhere from Matt Benning to Adam Larsson being part of that conversation. Ultimately, the Oilers chose not to move forward with either option.

Wild and Flames Were Working on Something

Pierre LeBrun notes the Minnesota Wild and Calgary Flames had been working on Jason Zucker trade but it fell through before the deadline yesterday. He’s not certain as to why the deal was never completed but Darren Dreger followed up during an interview and thought it was because the two teams simply ran out of time.
