NHL Rumor: St. Louis to Trade Alex Pietrangelo for Patrick Laine?

With the acquisition of Justin Faulk, is it possible the St. Louis Blues are thinking about moving Alex Pietrangelo?

With the acquisition of Justin Faulk, is it possible the St. Louis Blues are thinking about moving Alex Pietrangelo?

One would assume that any issues between Pietrangelo and Blues management (there were some) would have dissipated with the lifting of a Stanley Cup. That said, the timing of the trade that saw the Blues land Faulk from the Carolina Hurricanes and then quickly sign him to a seven-year extension at the same dollar value as Pietrangelo, is intriguing. One person who finds it a bit more than intriguing, is Sid Seixeiro of Sportsnets Tim & Sid.

Sid decided to go on a rant this afternoon suggesting that Faulk’s signing might be the writing on the wall for Pietrangelo. He said, “All I’m saying is, for this to happen less than a week before the season, I find fascinating. Now Joel Edmundson went the other way, it’s not like they need to trade a defenseman, the math works out there for St. Louis.” Tim then chimes in asking if maybe St. Louis did the deal to keep Faulk from Winnipeg and Sid said, “there’s some assets Winnipeg has if they’re not going to sign him.”

Sid was referring to Patrick Laine, who the Jets are having a hard time getting signed to an extension. The suggestion would be, what if St. Louis moved Pietrangelo to Winnipeg for Laine?

Author’s Note On Laine for Pietrangelo

This is a pretty big reach and all stems from the fact Sid is actively looking for the Jets to make a move for a defenseman. A depleted blue line and questions about Dustin Byfuglient’s future means there will a lot of questions.

That said, it’s hard to connect the dots that the Blues and Pietrangelo still have issues. And, even if they do, that Laine would be on the table for an older d-man who only has one year left on his contract.
