Possible False Positive COVID Tests Worrying at Least Two NHL Teams

A number of positive COVID cases have hit two NHL teams, but it is believed there are some possible false positive tests.

As per multiple insider reports, there have been a number of positive COVID-19 test cases in a recent run of tests administered by the NHL and members of a handful of teams have may have received false positive test results. As a result, this/these team(s) have been put on pause until the results can be confirmed. Among the teams affected, St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong has confirmed that players on his team have tested positive.

Armstrong said is a statement:

We have discovered discrepancies in Covid test results relating to multiple players. We have been in touch with and are working with the League to address these discrepancies with additional testing and expect to have further information later this afternoon.

The League will provide a further update when we have more information. Head Coach Craig Berube and our players will not be available to the media until after tonight’s game.


NHL insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the league is re-testing some of its teams and that the NHL might not be the only sport affected. New results should start to present themselves Wednesday afternoon.

Greg Wyshynski of EPSN reports, “Hearing it’s two teams in different playoff series that are both scheduled for this evening. Keep an eye out for a statement from one of them soon.”
